When looking at Joy’s work, it is undeniable she was born for it. From revitalizing Alfred Dunhill’s former home in the English countryside to designing celebrity homes for the likes of John Mayer and Leonardo DiCaprio, to creating the stunning Ralph Lauren Showroom, one has to wonder: how did it all start? A self-described inquisitive person, Joy shared that she was “hit in the head by a piece of stone that fell off a Gaudí structure in Spain,” as soon as she looked up she was “captivated by the stonework and wondered what career created something like that.” The rest is history. Joy began her career in architecture, and after years of sleepless nights she decided to pursue interior design for her “love of textiles, colors, and patterns” which allow her to “create the natural engulfing of the interior as opposed to the exterior enclosure of architecture.”

As an international designer, she lets the location set the tone and pays homage to the local culture. “A New York home should look like a New York home, not like an Italian Villa,” she shares, “I view new locations as opportunities to do new things.” Joy’s creative style is unique yet unmistakable - and as she describes it, a hodgepodge. She admires craftsmanship, mixing the antique with the modern, and “layering cultural and manmade elements” while always infusing her clients’ souls into the space.

She draws inspiration from nature, her travels, legends such as French interior decorator Francois Catroux and designer Hubert de Givenchy. She also admires and respects American interior designer Sheila Bridges. “Seeing her [Sheila’s] work being published and getting recognition when there weren’t many Black women being featured was inspiring,” she shares. To say Joy has made a name for herself in the world of interior design would be an understatement. She has been named to Elle Décors A-List, become a columnist for Veranda, and made her debut at Architectural Digests’ 100 in 2021, to name a few of her accolades. Joy, however, “works hard every day to create and make way for an ‘I made it moment’”.

When looking at the past and future of the industry Joy is elated to see wallpaper and jeweled-toned paints making a comeback. A fan of classic architecture, she is excited about “seeing a lot more love being given to historical spaces and cultural elements” and a “larger appreciation for makers, craftsmanship, and conservation”. But one thing she will not stand for is the trendy pillow chop. “Chopped pillows make me cry like an onion,” Joy laughs. She also shared her alternate career in lieu of designer would be a forensic scientist or screenwriter.

Joy’s energy is infectious and she infuses it to anyone - and any space - she encounters. Her “never stop learning. Never get comfortable” approach to life has made her a top designer, renowned around the world for her chic and unmistakable style. Her name says it all: Joy is the epitome of joy.
