Designer Mark Williams: A story of passion for “creating what isn’t yet there”

Enjoy an exclusive interview with Mark Williams where the renowned interior designer shares his story, passion, and vision.

The story of American interior design extraordinaire, Mark Williams, is as captivating as it is inspiring. He is a true testament to the power of hard work driven by a passion for creating spaces that have not yet been imagined.

When creating his firm, Mark Williams Design, from the ground up, he shared with Cosentino that even though it might feel like a “blip in time,” it is the result of many years of relentless hard work. “The only way to go into starting a small business from scratch is full of optimism, fortitude, and naivete,” he continued, “if people knew what it took to start from nothing and build up, I'm afraid not many would volunteer,” he chuckled. He highlights the importance of viewing challenges as opportunities, not obstacles. “Optimism and naivete, in proper measure, are very helpful tools,” he said.

Mark exudes passion when telling his story, so of course, we wanted to know what inspires him, and it can be summarized in one word: creating. Creating homes, creating relationships, creating whatever is stewing in his creative brain - that is what gets him up at the wee hours of the morning. He is inspired by raw materials and imagining how he can apply them. His favorite Cosentino material is definitely Dekton, which helps him infuse his clients’ vision and personality into their spaces

Speaking of Dekton, he believes “natural quarried stone, though beautiful, is not very durable for kitchen applications, but with Dekton we can achieve the stone look with great durability, which is extremely important to the American kitchen client”. Most recently, Mark specified Dekton for the stunning 2021 Kips Bay Show House kitchen in Palm Beach, FL. He worked closely with the homeowner, who was looking for a lighter material, and they both fell in love with Dekton Entzo. The color has the perfect light and bright quality with warmer tones on a white foundation, and once selected, Mark “built the rest of the palette around Entzo”.

Mark has been working with Cosentino for over 15 years and even created his own Silestone color, Nymbus. The color reflects his love for light and his desire to create something honoring the beauty of nature with an “unexpected sensitivity.”
