Creating is my main source of inspiration

That is such a great and deep question. In life, I'm inspired by creating! It might be with a non-profit, a client’s home, or anything that’s stewing in my creative brain. My inspiration can be summarized in “creating what is not there yet” - it’s what keeps me up in the wee hours. In interior design, raw materials are a great source of inspiration. When the notions are combined with a client’s dreams and I create spaces they enjoy, that truly inspires me.

Optimism and naivete were key in my recipe to success

I started out my interior design journey on my own, with small projects. Thinking back on how I started, I value greatly the opportunities I get today. It feels like a blip in time, but it was years of preparation and hard work.

Reflecting back on my journey, when you start a small business as a designer, the only way to go into it is full of optimism, fortitude, and naivete. If anyone knew what it took to build from the group up, not many would volunteer. The key is seeing challenges as opportunities and not obstacles, and I think that is how we’ve been able to become what we’ve become over the years. Optimism and naivete, in proper measure, are extremely helpful tools.

A passion for Cosentino materials

Where to start? Cosentino materials are so varied and versatile I'm able to use them in so many different ways. I used Dekton Entzo in the kitchen of the Kips Bay Show House in Palm Beach, FL in 2021, I am currently working on a contemporary home with a Dekton facade. It is my first experience with facades and getting a high-gloss flat surface is not something any material can give you, which is why Dekton was the perfect choice.

The beauty of product development

I also had the opportunity to work with the product development team in Cosentino’s Spain HQ to create my own color, Silestone Nymbus, which I used in my own personal bathroom. I worked with the team to create something from nothing, learned how the process of creating colors works - from a chemical and mechanical standpoint - it was amazing and enriching. I loved exploring how to manipulate materials to create something I can use, it is a great tool to have in my design toolbox.

KIPS BAY 2021 WITH DEKTON ENTZO

Dekton was the obvious choice for this Florida home because it can achieve the stone look and feel but presents all the qualities and durability important to homeowners. Natural stones are stunning, but they are very high maintenance and not as durable through the years, and the amazing thing about Dekton is that it gives you the best of both worlds.

For Kips Bay I worked hand-in-hand with the homeowner, he was very involved in the process and excited about Dekton. He wanted something light and bright, and when we presented him with Dekton Entzo, it was game over. Entzo has that marble quality with warmer tones and a white foundation, and we build the rest of the palette in the kitchen around this color.

Get to Know Mark Williams

Use one word to describe yourself: Steady. Silestone or Dekton? Dekton! What is the worst design trend of the past 10 years? Painting your house black. What is your favorite design trend of the past 10 years? Moving into warmer tones, using white oak floors, natural quality of the colors, lighter countertop, keeping things light, bright, and simple. Simplicity is moving into the marketplace again and that makes me happy. Share the best advice you’ve ever received: Don’t give up. What is your favorite color? Blue. What is your least favorite color? Bright acid yellow. What is your favorite space in your house? Living room. What is one thing you can’t live without? Candles. Minimalist or maximalist design? Minimalist if I had to choose. But there’s room for both.
