With today’s health concerns causing people to spend more time than ever at home, cleanliness in the kitchen has become top of mind for most homeowners. Countertops, backsplashes and other surfaces can collect spilled liquids, ingredients and fingerprints which can become a breeding ground for bacteria and other pathogens.
Experts agree that regular maintenance and cleaning is the best way to keep surfaces as bacteria and pathogen free as possible, but there are other solutions available to help limit the growth of microbes in the home. While some materials, like marble and granite, are more susceptible to stains or require sealing to protect against wear and tear, Cosentino products Silestone and Dekton are much easier to maintain.
Dekton by Cosentino is almost zero porosity due to the fabrication process, which means not only does it never need to be sealed, but it naturally prevents liquids and gases from penetrating the surface. This also makes the surface particularly easy to clean — Dekton can be cleaned with soap and water, but disinfectant sprays, wipes or all-purpose cleaners from Clorox, Lysol, Puracy, Simple Green, Soft Scrub or Seventh Generation can also be used without any surface damage due to the high chemical resistance of the material.
Silestone is made up of quartz, one of the hardest natural materials, which makes it resistant to scratching and staining, as well as easy to maintain. While a damp cloth will clean the surface effectively, homeowners looking to take an extra step in the name of cleanliness can use a pH balanced gentle household cleaner, like dish soap or an all-purpose cleaner, or a combination of water, soap and rubbing alcohol. Cosentino recommends that homeowners using more intense cleaning products rinse the surface with water immediately following, as harsher products can damage the resin.
“We’re proud of the developments we’ve been able to make regarding ease of maintenance in our products,” said Valentín Tijeras García, Vice President of Global Product R&D for Cosentino. “We hope this offers some peace of mind to our customers who have Cosentino surfaces in their homes and in other spaces.”
Dekton’s availability in large format slab sizes (56” X 126”) also adds to the brand’s ease of care, as the material requires less seams when fabricated then if it were to be ordered in smaller slab sizes.
