San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

This house turns privacy into a strategy, hiding beneath its monolithic appearance a succession of spaces thought of as different microcosms

The historical center of the Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende is characterized by the irregular topography of its dense urban fabric. Along one of its picturesque slopes, on a partly demolished plinth of local stone in which a small free space has been reserved for the planting of a garden, rises this house, which can only be reached through a narrow walkway and serves as a refuge from civilization.

The exterior’s picture of solidness vanishes indoors, where the servant and served spaces (in modules of 2x4 and 4x4, respectively) are chained together by means of white walls that make the furniture stand out in each and every room. The main attraction is the ascent to the roof terrace, where the residents get a panorama of, and thus a reconnection with, the city of San Miguel.
