How do you update a flat without losing any of its essence on the way? This is precisely the great challenge that architecture and interior design studios face today, for whom respect for what is already in place is one of the most important cornerstones in every project. This is the case of Vivienda U1, a flat located on Paseo de Uribitarte, in Bilbao, and which was designed by Andoni Díaz, head of the AD studio. “It is a flat in the city centre, in a historic building dating back to 1901. The history of the building had much to contribute and much to tell about the space, but we also had to design a modern home, adapted to today’s needs and equipped with the latest technology”, he explains.
The result is a modern space with clean, refined shapes against a backdrop that is reminiscent of and in harmony with its past. To create this fluid connection between past and present, the choice of colours and materials was key. Thus, the studio opted for timeless finishes that have stood the test of time, such as the light and neutral tones used in the kitchen, which combine perfectly with the ultra-compact DKTN Helena stone, a shade inspired by Onyx natural stone.
“As an interior design studio, we were pretty clear from the beginning that we would chose a DKTN worktop – as is usually the case in most of our projects –, because it gives us great peace of mind and confidence about the materials chosen. Cosentino is a safe bet, and working with its brands is a sure hit”, the studio further says.
DKTN’s versatility and performance have earned it the trust of professionals
“We were looking for an ultra-compact material with great resistance to abrasion and scratches. It is a small kitchen that will be used daily, so the properties of the material are key for us. In addition, the chosen colour, DKTN Helena, perfectly fits the colour range and composition of the project”, says Antoni Díaz about the use of this Cosentino stone in the project.
A large window illuminates the kitchen and enhances the rich colour of DKTN Helena, the material used for the worktop and front, which features a perfect balance of grey and white tones and a delicate crackle that adds depth to the space. “The technical properties of the material are of utmost importance if we are to achieve a satisfactory end result and offer peace of mind to the customer, but we also fell in love with the design of DKTN Helena. The delicate water effect it creates, its timeless tones and extra glossy finish are exactly what the project called for”, says the studio.
As the surface was intended for the kitchen, ease of cleaning and maintenance were key features. “Despite its daily use, its finish and gloss do not fade, and stains are very easy to remove”, he explains. Andoni Díaz found nothing but advantages in choosing Cosentino stones, just as his customers found nothing but success when they entrusted him with the task of adapting an old house to a modern lifestyle. Welcome to the 21st century!
