The perfect material for a bold vision

Nothing makes a statement like a large wall cladded in Dekton, and that’s exactly what we see at Nippon Express’ Itasca offices. Kasey Kluxdal, Senior Design Architect for Harris Architects had a vision in mind and presented the Cosentino team with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and together they explored the many Dekton colors, textures, and thicknesses that could bring her vision to life.

The decision was clear, Dekton Bergen was the perfect color for Nippon Express’ reception area. From the Stonika Collection, Dekton Bergen is inspired by natural Portobello marble with beautiful grayish veins creating sculptural patterns on an off-white base. With its high-gloss print, 4 mm thickness, and large panels, Dekton Bergen transformed the reception area of this global Japanese logistics company.

The magic is in the bookmatch

When cladding this two-story wall, it was imperative that the bookmatch be perfect. Cosentino and the installer, Stone Systems of Chicago, worked hand-in-hand to bookmatch the large Dekton panels to create a seamless statement wall in the reception area and behind the two-story stairwell. Dekton’s large-format panels and tight grout joints also greatly contribute to the visually continuous aesthetic of the wall and the thin 4 mm thickness allows the wall area to be as narrow as possible.

This logistic giant’s Itasca office is as unique as it is unforgettable. Dekton Bergen adorns the walls and is the first thing people see when they step inside - talk about making a good first impression.

Starting point: a façade in natural stone facing some problems

In 2021, the partial restoration of a building situated at 3 Via Paleocapa in Bergamo (Italy) was successfully completed. The job consisted of replacing the existing ventilated façade, which was only 15 years old, with a more lightweight and equally beautiful one.

When the Duesse Hi Tech team took over the management of the project, they were faced with a building at serious risk of collapse due to the weight of the 250 m2 of natural stone - probably Calacatta of national origin - used on its façade. Furthermore, on the ground floor, designed as a portico supported on pillars, they found a 5 cm depression caused by the static load. The risk posed to the building and pedestrians -as it is a busy street in Bergamo- demanded quick action.

In addition to the excess weight of the natural stone, there was a technical problem with the anchoring system of the ventilated façade, which had been incorrectly designed in terms of static load bearing capacity. In the restoration, 12 mm Dekton Entzo slabs were used to replace the natural stone, thus significantly reducing the weight to about 50 kg per unit on each of the building’s walls.

Considering the urgency of replacing the façade, Dekton was the best option. The new design, the installation of the substructure and insulation layer, and the entire cladding were completed in just two weeks with a team of three people.

Numéro d'image 69 de la section actuelle de Via Paleocapa Facade de Cosentino Canada

Solution: Dekton technology without compromising on beauty

Having solved the technical challenges, it was necessary to find a material as beautiful as natural stone and with a finish similar to Calacatta. The wide range of Dekton colours made it possible to find the closest finish to the original cladding: Entzo. The result is the same chromatic and “natural” stone effect required by municipal and provincial authorities for areas of historic interest.

In short, Dekton ventilated façades are perfect both for the refurbishment of existing cladding and for new projects. There are five properties that make Dekton the perfect solution for ventilated façades: 1. Lightweight; 2. Large format slabs (Jumbo format 325 x 159 cm); 3. Quick installation; 4. Natural appearance; 5. High static and architectural performance.

Cosentino team, coordination at all stages of the project

Lakeside is a well-known commercial bank in the Chicago area, Illinois. As part of the refurbishment process of some of their offices, specifically the Oakbrook Terrace office, they hired the services of the architectural studio Pappageorge Haymes Ltd. From the very beginning, the studio planned a modern, interesting façade that would catch the eye of passers-by, inviting them to look at it.

The execution of a stunning façade required a high quality material. Pappageorge had worked with natural stone in the past, but problems always arose because of its poor UV resistance and technical limitations. The studio had heard about the technical properties of Dekton on exterior façades and was keen to learn more.

The Cosentino team met with Pappageorge architects, provided material samples and designed a mock-up featuring the XL 45 system. In this rainscreen system, aluminum rails are anchored to the back of the Dekton slab by horizontal grooves. In the end, Dekton was the material of choice for the versatility it offered in such a complex project. Stone Systems of Chicago, a certified fitter knowledgeable of the material, was in charge of the execution of the project.

The monolithic white of Dekton Zenith

After a difficult but very beautiful job under the direction of architect Donald Mouch, the Lakeside Bank façade is now one of the most impressive façades in Oakbrook Terrace, and the most beautiful ever executed by Stone Systems.

Without detracting from the flawless technical execution, a large part of the success is due to the beauty of the material. Dekton Zenith is part of the Solid Collection. Its near-perfect Nordic white blends excellently with the red brick used on the rest of the Lakeside Bank building, in a balanced mix of modernity and classicism.

A premium material for a first class institution: the Lakeside Bank has undoubtedly found its perfect match in Dekton. Dekton’s superior technical properties coupled with design aspects such as elegance, sobriety and perfection, make the Oakbrook Terrace building the most prominent of all Lakeside Bank buildings.

The visual impact of large format Dekton

The new Liderim offices in Tel Aviv (Israel) exude elegance. Once in the reception area, there is an impressive desk made from a huge, seamless, large-format Dekton Aura slab. The effect is overwhelming, thanks to the use of the same material for the wall and ceiling cladding. The overall feeling is one of understated luxury, combining a material such as Dekton Aura, inspired by classic marble, with cement flooring and wood.

The desk has been created from several planes with a sought-after asymmetry, giving it movement and modernity, in contrast to the classic look of the finish itself. Dekton Aura, a colour from the Natural Collection, with grey to beige veining reminiscent of Calacatta and Carrara marble, contributes to this.

When the architect responsible for the project, Eli Hacohen, was asked why he chose Dekton Aura, the answer was clear: ‘I chose Dekton Aura for the Liderim offices because I wanted to convey understated luxury, and because of the versatility of the material for application as wall, ceiling and furniture cladding.’

Dekton, interior design down to the last millimetre

In the Liderim offices, everything is designed to create a welcoming atmosphere that invites employees and visitors to stay. To this end, the exterior features are integrated into the interior of the building, providing continuous visual communication, especially in the entrance, reception area and meeting rooms.

Everything has been controlled and meticulously executed. Nothing has been left to chance. Not surprisingly, the roof cutting and the wall cladding also required a great deal of precision and detailed planning. This was perhaps the main challenge of the project, which Hacohen successfully overcame thanks to the Cosentino team, which is always ready to provide technical solutions.

The choice of the same material, Dekton Aura, for the tables in the meeting rooms has been another success of the project. In addition to creating a cosy space, in combination with the beige leather chairs, the material connects with the reception area of the offices, strengthening the original creative concept. Dekton is also available in a thickness of only 4mm in its Slim version, which offers multiple possibilities as furniture cladding – table tops, cabinet fronts, and one-piece items such as side tables – without the disadvantages of natural stone, which is highly susceptible to scratches, liquids or sunlight exposure.

A well-designed LED lighting system, plant materials in the right places and plenty of natural light complete the final look.

The lightness of Dekton, the aesthetics of concrete

In the Vitania skyscraper in Tel Aviv, which houses a showroom for Mazda and Ford cars, a new part has been added to the office area. The building boasts a multi-storey atrium with a huge multimedia screen, which overlooks the street and occupies the full height of the space.

For the cladding of this new part, the idea was to use a material suitable for working with large, thin slabs. It also had to be aesthetically pleasing and blend in well with the concrete finish of the rest of the tower.

Therefore, the material chosen was Dekton Slim in Soke colour, with an ultra-thin thickness of 4mm. This colour is part of the Industrial Collection and is inspired by classic cement, perfect for the modern finish that the architect wanted to achieve.

A skyscraper with a focus on sustainability

Vitania is an office tower situated in Tel Aviv, Israel. With its 17 storeys and 19,500m2 built above ground – plus 3 storeys of parking below ground level – it rises majestically above a beautiful green area. Not surprisingly, the tower meets the strictest technical specifications and sustainability criteria to save energy and money, challenges that the BREEM-certified Dekton has helped to overcome.

Visually, the building has a luxurious lobby and offers its users the possibility to configure the office according to their needs. The building is attractive for its simplicity, achieved in part by the use of concrete and clean, straight lines. In the new part, the walls, floors and doors of the lobby were clad with Dekton, achieving greater uniformity. ‘The building itself is a contemporary building and the desire was to convey modernity and cleanliness, both in the main lobby and throughout the floor. The colour we chose (Soke) perfectly matches the experience we were looking for,’ explains Elad Cohen, architect at Alex Meitlis Architecture and Design.

In addition, as a certified fire-resistant material, Dekton helped to provide the extra safety required for a colossal building such as the Vitania Tower.

Large-scale passive building

The Innovation Technological Center (ITC) is a newly built building located within the AEC Illuminazione headquarters, where research and development work is carried out. The building has a surface area of 26,500 m2 and was designed by the Milanese architectural studio SBGA Blengini Ghirardelli, who based their design on pure, simple geometric lines. The heart of the project, known as “The Lab”, is formed by the intersection of two parallelepipeds in which, over an area of 3,000 m2, technicians and researchers work together in a space designed to encourage collaboration.

One of the most eye-catching features of this project is its northern façade. This façade, made of large-format Dekton Domoos slabs and with a surface area of 1,100 m2, is one of the largest Dekton façades in Europe. The cladding was installed on the ventilated façade using a Keil fixed anchoring system. The choice of material was based on the company’s sustainability criteria and the purpose of insulating the building from high temperatures.

Dekton Domoos is a finish from the Solid Collection. It is a dark, almost black shade, available in large format slabs (320cm x 144cm), which is ideal for outdoors and large surfaces and perfect for a ventilated façade.

In line with the company’s philosophy

The ITC building is the best example of AEC’s philosophy of innovation and automation. AEC’s business vision and investment decisions continually seek innovative solutions in the lighting of public spaces. The building creates an interesting relationship between the exterior and interior. The landscape outside serves as inspiration to create a relaxing atmosphere. The double-height entrance and the glazed façade provide a light-filled space where natural light prevails. Everything was designed with the wellbeing of employees in mind and nothing here is reminiscent of a traditional factory concept.

The building was built on three levels. On the ground and first floors, where tests and experiments are carried out under extreme environmental conditions, a series of double and triple height laboratories were set up from the mezzanine floor, from which it is possible to safely monitor the tests. The research offices are on the third floor. The clean, geometric lines continue on this floor. The building is completed by a skylight roof that brings light into the centre of the workspace. The technical systems and photovoltaic panels are located above the roof, concealed by a cornice, rounding off the project.

The most innovative and sustainable materials combined with avant-garde architecture have come together to create the ITC, which has become AEC’s best calling card.

The shop “Busted” gets a new look

Busted is a fashion shop for young people located in the main shopping area of Silkeborg, in northern Denmark. The shop needed an update to attract a younger and more demanding clientele. During this refurb process, both the façade and the shop window played a key role in attracting customers to the shop.

Busted's owners commissioned architect Morten Thomsen, founder of MMe Byg Aps, to undertake the renovation and interior design project. Thomsen invested time in researching different cladding solutions that could radically change the Busted façade. In his search, he had the good fortune to come across Cosentino's Project Manager for the region, who introduced him to the Dekton brand and its countless benefits for façade applications.

Morten was impressed with the 8mm thick slabs, which allow for on-site handling and processing, as well as the use of an invisible adhesive for fixing.

You can’t go wrong with Dekton Danae

MMe Byg Aps studio wanted a colour that would appeal to Busted’s target customers: women with a youthful, casual style, and within a fairly broad age range. From the very beginning, Dekton Danae was a favourite finish because of its brightness and timeless character. Its availability in large format slabs- 320 x 144 cm - and in two textures - grip and matt - were two highly valued aspects in the final choice. After all, it is not for nothing that this is one of Cosentino’s best sellers.

The new Busted shop, which opened in spring 2021, now looks spectacular on one of Silkeborg's most popular shopping streets. Long-time customers are delighted with the change and, more importantly, the new look is attracting a new clientele who had never thought of coming.

The renovation of the Busted shop is yet another example of the importance of design in public spaces in commercial terms. It also illustrates how quickly the investment is recouped when the project is well planned and you work with a partner like Cosentino.

A ‘facelift’ for Westfield Newmarket

Westfield Newmarket shopping centre in central Auckland, New Zealand, reopened in August 2019. After 18 months of construction work, this shopping centre, which dates back to the 1980s, reopened its doors with a new look, 230 shops and 2,800 parking spaces.

The project involved the renovation and extension of the existing building, doubling its previous size and quadrupling the number of shops. After many months of work and an investment of 790 million dollars, the updated Newmarket rises majestically between 277 and 309 Broadway Street.

It was clear to the team of architects from the Scentre Group, the project developer, that the façade would play a key role in the renovation process. In addition to becoming the most eye-catching design feature, it had to incorporate the latest technology in terms of energy efficiency. A ventilated façade therefore appeared to be the most suitable choice. And for this ventilated façade, there was no better partner than Dekton.

The installation was carried out by the Eurotherm Facades NZ team. Two anchoring systems were used in the process: the Etem Alum Systemand the Keil Anchor. The technical support from Cosentino's headquarters in Spain was key to the successful execution, providing a prompt and professional advisory service whenever requested.

Sandy-coloured Dekton Danae

The new ventilated façade features 700m2 of 12mm Dekton Danae slabs. In addition to its clean, fresh look, Dekton Danae contrasts with the black window frames and the large glass surfaces.

Dekton Danae is a colour from the Natural collection that is reminiscent of the movement of sand. It is one of Cosentino's best-sellers as it works perfectly in almost any space. Furthermore, being a neutral colour, it is full of nuances that ensure its versatility and say goodbye to boredom.

In the case of the Westfield Newmarket shopping centre, this effect of movement is the result not only of the richness of the material -Dekton Danae- but also of its clever cutting: all along the façade, in a continuous pattern, one larger row is placed every four rows of slabs.

This feat of design aims to bring the Newmarket in line with the district where it is located: a thriving and trendy shopping area with the best tapas bars, the most alternative art galleries and the most authentic Maori arts and crafts.
