The ultra-compact and durable DKTN by Cosentino surface was chosen for the renovation project of the elegant and stylish Crown Quarter Hotel in 2022, located in an iconic area of Wexford, Ireland.
DKTN Laurent was the material of choice as it offered all the properties, characteristics and finishes required for the project. Indeed, in addition to its aesthetics, DKTN offers high UV, freeze-thaw and stain resistance, as well as colour stability over time, making it an ideal material for use in exterior façades.
Nicole Carr and Brendan Roche of Carr Architects, a studio based in Wexford, Ireland, were the architects responsible for the redesign of this building, while Stone Solutions were the manufacturers and fitters of the Cosentino surfaces used in the project.
The best façade surface
Nicole Carr and Brendan Roche, architects and managers of Carr Architects, were commissioned to manage the project from start to finish. On the choice of DKTN, Brendan says: “I have worked with DKTN on other projects and it has always impressed me. As it is an ultra-compact surface, it really looks perfect when used on a façade. The fact that it is resistant to harsh weather conditions, scratches and UV rays means that its colour will not fade with prolonged exposure to the sun. DKTN is also a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle. Everybody wins!”
This recently renovated hotel combines a variety of materials, among which the ultra-compact DKTN surface stands out. Although the glued façades were considered as the best option in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency, the licence did not allow the entire building to be clad in DKTN.
And the chosen one was DKTN Laurent
With its striking brown background crossed by golden veins, DKTN Laurent is reminiscent of Port Laurent natural stone. On the choice of DKTN Laurent, Nicole said: “I met with the Cosentino Ireland team at our offices and looked at five or six different colours. Our top two options were Kelya and Laurent, but in the end we felt that DKTN Laurent would be the ideal choice.”
As a carbon neutral material, DKTN adds an extra layer of sustainability to any architectural project, while also ensuring a long service life as its colour will not fade with prolonged exposure to the sun and it will not scratch or crack. It is the perfect solution for a functional and aesthetically pleasing commercial building.
