A clean and harmonious design

With over one hundred years of history, Fannie May chocolate stores are a Chicago institution. Fannie May’s first recipes date back to 1920, and since then they have created more than 100 unique and delicious treats. It is precisely this innovative spirit that is reflected in the design of all their stores, such as this one in La Grange, Illinois.

The team of DXU Architects opted for a façade clad in Dekton Zenith, a pure white against which the Chicago-based chain’s iconic red logo stands out. A subtle black strip in Dekton Domoos further accentuates the overall clean and harmonious image of the store in the building as a whole.

Having used Dekton with great success in previous applications, architects were won over by the endless possibilities of this material in terms of performance and design. The perfect installation of the large panels carried out by the Stone Systems team fully achieved the desired result.

Dekton, the perfect partner for the most demanding exteriors

The old brick walls of the building were not straight. This problem required the fitter to make several strategic adjustments that allowed the Dekton panels to straighten the walls. Additionally, the resistance of Dekton prevents stains and scratches caused by urban traffic and the large amounts of salt used to de-ice pavements during the winter.

Unlike other products that fade in colour and require high maintenance, Dekton remains unaltered over time, regardless of wear and tear, weather conditions or other external factors.

Starting point: a façade in natural stone facing some problems

In 2021, the partial restoration of a building situated at 3 Via Paleocapa in Bergamo (Italy) was successfully completed. The job consisted of replacing the existing ventilated façade, which was only 15 years old, with a more lightweight and equally beautiful one.

When the Duesse Hi Tech team took over the management of the project, they were faced with a building at serious risk of collapse due to the weight of the 250 m2 of natural stone - probably Calacatta of national origin - used on its façade. Furthermore, on the ground floor, designed as a portico supported on pillars, they found a 5 cm depression caused by the static load. The risk posed to the building and pedestrians -as it is a busy street in Bergamo- demanded quick action.

In addition to the excess weight of the natural stone, there was a technical problem with the anchoring system of the ventilated façade, which had been incorrectly designed in terms of static load bearing capacity. In the restoration, 12 mm Dekton Entzo slabs were used to replace the natural stone, thus significantly reducing the weight to about 50 kg per unit on each of the building’s walls.

Considering the urgency of replacing the façade, Dekton was the best option. The new design, the installation of the substructure and insulation layer, and the entire cladding were completed in just two weeks with a team of three people.

Imagem número 64 da actual secção de Via Paleocapa Facade - Página 2 de 5 da Cosentino Portugal

Solution: Dekton technology without compromising on beauty

Having solved the technical challenges, it was necessary to find a material as beautiful as natural stone and with a finish similar to Calacatta. The wide range of Dekton colours made it possible to find the closest finish to the original cladding: Entzo. The result is the same chromatic and “natural” stone effect required by municipal and provincial authorities for areas of historic interest.

In short, Dekton ventilated façades are perfect both for the refurbishment of existing cladding and for new projects. There are five properties that make Dekton the perfect solution for ventilated façades: 1. Lightweight; 2. Large format slabs (Jumbo format 325 x 159 cm); 3. Quick installation; 4. Natural appearance; 5. High static and architectural performance.

Cosentino team, coordination at all stages of the project

Lakeside is a well-known commercial bank in the Chicago area, Illinois. As part of the refurbishment process of some of their offices, specifically the Oakbrook Terrace office, they hired the services of the architectural studio Pappageorge Haymes Ltd. From the very beginning, the studio planned a modern, interesting façade that would catch the eye of passers-by, inviting them to look at it.

The execution of a stunning façade required a high quality material. Pappageorge had worked with natural stone in the past, but problems always arose because of its poor UV resistance and technical limitations. The studio had heard about the technical properties of Dekton on exterior façades and was keen to learn more.

The Cosentino team met with Pappageorge architects, provided material samples and designed a mock-up featuring the XL 45 system. In this rainscreen system, aluminum rails are anchored to the back of the Dekton slab by horizontal grooves. In the end, Dekton was the material of choice for the versatility it offered in such a complex project. Stone Systems of Chicago, a certified fitter knowledgeable of the material, was in charge of the execution of the project.

The monolithic white of Dekton Zenith

After a difficult but very beautiful job under the direction of architect Donald Mouch, the Lakeside Bank façade is now one of the most impressive façades in Oakbrook Terrace, and the most beautiful ever executed by Stone Systems.

Without detracting from the flawless technical execution, a large part of the success is due to the beauty of the material. Dekton Zenith is part of the Solid Collection. Its near-perfect Nordic white blends excellently with the red brick used on the rest of the Lakeside Bank building, in a balanced mix of modernity and classicism.

A premium material for a first class institution: the Lakeside Bank has undoubtedly found its perfect match in Dekton. Dekton’s superior technical properties coupled with design aspects such as elegance, sobriety and perfection, make the Oakbrook Terrace building the most prominent of all Lakeside Bank buildings.

Façade combines light Dekton Danae with dark natural slate

When José Luis Moral takes off, the world lies at his feet. The fervent sports pilot climbs over the meadows and wooded hills north of Lake Zurich and looks out over a breathtaking Alpine panorama. The snow-covered mountains glitter above, as does the lake below. Moral has been installing surfaces for individual construction projects of his customers for around 30 years on its banks and far beyond. With Roandi Immobilien AG he has become one of the developers himself.

His down-to-earth attitude also benefits him here. This way Moral was able to find optimally located logistical locations in a very attractive region, both scenically and commercially, not only for Pizrog Natursteine AG, which he is the head of, but also for an important business partner. The main user in Neuhaus became the “Cosentino Center Zurich” with 375 sq m of exhibition and office space and 2,325 sq m of storage space. The specialist for individual processing and the laying of stone surfaces moved with his company to Bubikon, which is 15 km away.

Aesthetic and functional

“We planned and realized the two buildings in parallel with a local architectural office. This is how it always work best on site,” says José Luis Moral. At the same time, he set uniform guidelines. “Character-rich design is very important to me, as well as outstanding functionality and sustainable quality for all Roandi items.” This applies in particular to the building envelope. The back-ventilated curtain façade has proven to be particularly effective here. It permanently combines high energy efficiency with extensive design freedom.

“The façade front should be invitingly bright and radiate a light Mediterranean warmth, an impression that is reinforced by the contrasting dark warehouse in the background,” explains José Luis Moral. “The selected materials should naturally embody the highest standards of quality and the proverbial Swiss precision. I think we succeeded in this through the combination of Dekton Danae and natural shale. By the way, both materials come from Spain just like me,” adds Moral with a wink.

Ultra-compact surface

Natural minerals, pressure and heat created the two surfaces used. However, it can take millions of years for the clay sediment to become shale. With Dekton by Cosentino the metamorphosis happens in a controlled and accelerated manner within a few hours. At 25,000 tons of pressure and 1200°C the minerals are formed into an ultra-compact surface using particle sinter technology (PST). Dekton is resistant to cold, heat and thermal shocks, UV and color-fast. The material can therefore be used both inside and outside.

Dekton is produced in large-format panels of up to 320 cm x 144 cm and in over 50 designs and textures. In the Roandi projects, the sandy shade Dekton Danae from the Natural Collection in 1.2 cm thickness was used. An embedded glass fiber mesh ensures that no fragments can come loose if the façade is damaged. Cosentino delivered the plates that measure up to 160 x 110 cm cut to size, slotted at the top and bottom and with processed edges, directly to the construction site – numbered consecutively and “just in time”.

Imagem número 114 da actual secção de Cosentino Center Zurich - Página 2 de 5 da Cosentino Portugal

Shimmering monolith

The substructure for the outer cladding consists of thermally separated aluminum brackets, which are fastened with bolt anchors to the concrete wall, otherwise insulated with 19 cm stone wool. Vertical L-profiles are attached to the supporting brackets with horizontal double T-rails. The top and bottom slotted Dekton plates were inserted into these and securely fixed on site by the Pizrog Natursteine AG installers. “With this system you work very quickly and at the same time with high precision”, says Moral.

Since Dekton only has a negligibly low thermal expansion coefficient the spaces between the individual plates can be very small. “While large window areas allow plenty of daylight inside the opaque part of the building envelope has a softly shimmering monolithic character this way”, says a satisfied José Luis Moral. He will soon be building again with Roandi. Another large commercial building is being built right next to the “Cosentino Center Zürich” - naturally again in the proven combination with Dekton Danae.

Large-scale passive building

The Innovation Technological Center (ITC) is a newly built building located within the AEC Illuminazione headquarters, where research and development work is carried out. The building has a surface area of 26,500 m2 and was designed by the Milanese architectural studio SBGA Blengini Ghirardelli, who based their design on pure, simple geometric lines. The heart of the project, known as “The Lab”, is formed by the intersection of two parallelepipeds in which, over an area of 3,000 m2, technicians and researchers work together in a space designed to encourage collaboration.

One of the most eye-catching features of this project is its northern façade. This façade, made of large-format Dekton Domoos slabs and with a surface area of 1,100 m2, is one of the largest Dekton façades in Europe. The cladding was installed on the ventilated façade using a Keil fixed anchoring system. The choice of material was based on the company’s sustainability criteria and the purpose of insulating the building from high temperatures.

Dekton Domoos is a finish from the Solid Collection. It is a dark, almost black shade, available in large format slabs (320cm x 144cm), which is ideal for outdoors and large surfaces and perfect for a ventilated façade.

In line with the company’s philosophy

The ITC building is the best example of AEC’s philosophy of innovation and automation. AEC’s business vision and investment decisions continually seek innovative solutions in the lighting of public spaces. The building creates an interesting relationship between the exterior and interior. The landscape outside serves as inspiration to create a relaxing atmosphere. The double-height entrance and the glazed façade provide a light-filled space where natural light prevails. Everything was designed with the wellbeing of employees in mind and nothing here is reminiscent of a traditional factory concept.

The building was built on three levels. On the ground and first floors, where tests and experiments are carried out under extreme environmental conditions, a series of double and triple height laboratories were set up from the mezzanine floor, from which it is possible to safely monitor the tests. The research offices are on the third floor. The clean, geometric lines continue on this floor. The building is completed by a skylight roof that brings light into the centre of the workspace. The technical systems and photovoltaic panels are located above the roof, concealed by a cornice, rounding off the project.

The most innovative and sustainable materials combined with avant-garde architecture have come together to create the ITC, which has become AEC’s best calling card.

The three dimensions of a renovated façade

At the end of 2019, the remodelling of an office building situated at 7 W 51st street in Manhattan was successfully completed. The design team responsible for the project, MZA Architects, planned a comprehensive renovation of the façade aimed at achieving a high-impact visual change. At the same time, the project aimed to find a technically feasible solution to the problem of dealing with an old structure in a dubious state of repair.

Both the architect and the developer visited Cosentino City New York to see first-hand Dekton’s technical and design possibilities for large outdoor surfaces. That first visit was enough to convince them of the suitability of Dekton for their project. They even chose three colours that matched the desired design concept. For the exterior façade they opted for Dekton Danae, a beige tone from the Natural Collection reminiscent of the sandy beach. For the lobby floor, they chose Dekton Edora, a shade in the same beige colour range as the façade, which creates a visual continuity between the exterior and interior of the building. Finally, for the interior walls of the building they chose Dekton Borea, a material reminiscent of wenge wood, which adds the stylish touch they were looking for in the renovation.

The result creates a balanced and warm look, in tan colours, which contrasts with the coldness of the typical black and white buildings of 1990s Manhattan.

“Dekton is undoubtedly the perfect fit for ventilated façades. It is as if Dekton was invented solely for this purpose”

Stone Truss Systems

Cut-to-size Dekton versatility

Having solved the first structural challenge, it was time to install Dekton and face the next challenges. For example, all corner details were made using mitres bonded to the panels, so they had to be perfectly manufactured and installed neatly taking into account adjacent panels. The different façade plans required detailed and meticulous manufacture.

Dekton can adapt to any system, and this project was no exception. For this project, Stone Truss Systems used KEIL stainless steel back anchors and placed a carbon mesh bonded to the slabs. They also used TS-179 aluminium horizontal wall rails, which were fixed to the substructure with anchor clips. In short, a masterpiece of construction that made it possible to install Dekton slabs firmly, without compromising the beauty of the original design.

The new façade of this building in the Diamond District, just a stone’s throw from Rockefeller Center, gives it an incredible look and makes it the envy of all its neighbours.

Dekton Odin, a unique look and feel of wood that stands the test of time

The Ette hotel is a newly built hotel in Kissimmee, Florida, USA. There are several Disney parks in the same city. As a result, the hotel welcomes thousands of tourists every year. This 126-room hotel attracts mainly families who, after their visits to the parks, make the pool area the center of the hotel’s social life.

Both the architect and the project developer were clear about the properties of the material to be used in the construction and the façade of the pool area. They wanted a finish with the texture of natural wood which, at the same time, would blend in with the façade. Furthermore, the material needed to withstand the wear and tear of a busy area, sudden changes in temperature and even possible damage in a hurricane-prone state like Florida. In addition to the technical specifications, design played a key role: both the architect and the developer wanted the look and feel of wood for its beauty and warmth.

Dekton Odin stood out from the start as a very interesting option: firstly, because of its extraordinary strength and hardness which, together with its hazelnut colour, perfect for the modern and functional style of the hotel, provided the desired combination of strength and design; and secondly, because it also met the necessary requirements for installation with the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system.

A façade to withstand Florida’s humidity

Florida’s unique weather conditions demanded a façade with a PERS system. The Pressure-Equalized Rainscreen System (PERS) is designed to retain moisture and prevent water from reaching the structural substrate. An air layer provides the necessary capillary force and ventilation to facilitate drainage and drying.

The PERS system also uses a joint system, known as infill strips, that reduces the amount of water penetrating the façade. Under balanced pressure conditions, water cannot penetrate the building structure.

Dekton is also the perfect partner for the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system installed at the hotel. This integrated attachment technology allows the use of mitered corners on 90% of the façade.

Once again, Dekton has become a very interesting façade cladding, this time at the Ette Hotel, where it meets the highest technical requirements without sacrificing on design.

Blanc Concrete to blend the house into its surroundings

The RS Arquitectura studio is the mastermind behind this impressive single family home located in Sant Julià de Vilatorta, in the province of Barcelona (Spain). The creators of this project, which was successfully completed in August 2020, explain the creative concept and the challenges they faced.

The house is located in a prestigious area of natural beauty that RS Arquitectura wanted to highlight from the beginning of the project. For this purpose, the studio planned an L-shaped volume with pure and simple lines, which opens onto the garden and views, maintaining the necessary privacy and intimacy. The house has three levels, perfectly connected with each other, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

The façade features three different claddings: Dekton is used as the main cladding, bringing elegance and subtlety to the space; then there is aluminium on the lower parts of the façade; finally, glass makes it possible to achieve this connection between the interior and exterior.

The finish chosen was Dekton Blanc Concrete. It is a material from the Tech Collection, reminiscent of concrete, which features small grey and beige veins on a white background. Its availability in large format slabs of 320 cm make it a perfect choice for a façade.

Imagem número 226 da actual secção de TR House - Página 2 de 5 da Cosentino Portugal

A non-porous material to withstand humid climates

Dekton was used as the main cladding of the house. It was installed using a cladding system with mechanical fasteners and adhesive cement. In addition to its unquestionable beauty, when it came to choosing this finish, the peace of mind of working with a material of great quality and purity and with the backing of a highly professional company was paramount.

Cosentino provided RS Arquitectura with technical advice throughout the entire construction process on a number of aspects such as the cutting and how to make the most of each slab without compromising on design. Cosentino also collaborated in the design of the façade, the training of the personnel in charge of installing it and the monitoring of the entire project to ensure that there were no problems.

In terms of product features, in addition to the extraordinary size of the slabs, RS Arquitectura highly appreciated Dekton's zero porosity. In humid climates with large temperature contrasts, such as Sant Julià de Vilatorta, a non-porous material is the best guarantee that it will age well.

A ‘facelift’ for Westfield Newmarket

Westfield Newmarket shopping centre in central Auckland, New Zealand, reopened in August 2019. After 18 months of construction work, this shopping centre, which dates back to the 1980s, reopened its doors with a new look, 230 shops and 2,800 parking spaces.

The project involved the renovation and extension of the existing building, doubling its previous size and quadrupling the number of shops. After many months of work and an investment of 790 million dollars, the updated Newmarket rises majestically between 277 and 309 Broadway Street.

It was clear to the team of architects from the Scentre Group, the project developer, that the façade would play a key role in the renovation process. In addition to becoming the most eye-catching design feature, it had to incorporate the latest technology in terms of energy efficiency. A ventilated façade therefore appeared to be the most suitable choice. And for this ventilated façade, there was no better partner than Dekton.

The installation was carried out by the Eurotherm Facades NZ team. Two anchoring systems were used in the process: the Etem Alum Systemand the Keil Anchor. The technical support from Cosentino's headquarters in Spain was key to the successful execution, providing a prompt and professional advisory service whenever requested.

Sandy-coloured Dekton Danae

The new ventilated façade features 700m2 of 12mm Dekton Danae slabs. In addition to its clean, fresh look, Dekton Danae contrasts with the black window frames and the large glass surfaces.

Dekton Danae is a colour from the Natural collection that is reminiscent of the movement of sand. It is one of Cosentino's best-sellers as it works perfectly in almost any space. Furthermore, being a neutral colour, it is full of nuances that ensure its versatility and say goodbye to boredom.

In the case of the Westfield Newmarket shopping centre, this effect of movement is the result not only of the richness of the material -Dekton Danae- but also of its clever cutting: all along the façade, in a continuous pattern, one larger row is placed every four rows of slabs.

This feat of design aims to bring the Newmarket in line with the district where it is located: a thriving and trendy shopping area with the best tapas bars, the most alternative art galleries and the most authentic Maori arts and crafts.
