When it comes to designing a modern and timeless interior, choosing the right materials is key. For the owner of two rental properties in Torhout, Belgium, the priority was clear: working with a durable material that can withstand the test of time.
The project, consisting of two family homes, was designed by interior architect Tine Horré of Mliving. "The client initially approached me for the design of the kitchen. After the kitchen design was completed, there was an additional request for guidance on electricity, flooring, painting, and custom furniture” according to Tine. In short, the project involved a complete interior finishing starting from rough construction. The main request was to provide durable, yet beautiful materials.
The design called for a modern and timeless style, and Dekton in the colour Argentium was the perfect choice. The material was used for the living spaces, kitchen countertops, bathroom floors, shower walls, and custom-made pieces such as the bathtub surround and sink backsplash. With its durability and low maintenance, the material was an ideal choice for a rental property.
One of the challenges of the project was the concrete staircase with black anti-slip noses that the client had chosen and was already present in the living room. It was a visually disturbing factor in the overall design. Tine says: "I decided to propose to the client to cover the staircase with Dekton and raise the floor levels, which was a significant additional cost that was not initially planned. However, my persuasive skills won the client over. The result was a staircase that contributed to the modern and timeless aesthetics of the interior. The client was very satisfied with their decision, despite the extra costs. The result would have been completely different with a visible concrete staircase in the living room."
The use of the same material on the floor and kitchen countertop, with its side panels visually connecting to the floor tiles, created a harmonious and consistent look throughout the homes. This design feature was one of the most interesting and unique aspects of the project.
Overall, the use of Dekton was a smart choice for this project. Its durability, low maintenance, and aesthetic qualities contributed to the creation of a modern and timeless interior. The material's versatility and ease of use allowed for its application in various areas of the homes, resulting in a cohesive and visually stunning design by Mliving.
