The Edificio Carrión is perhaps the most iconic building in Madrid. Located in Puerta del Sol, it is known worldwide for its privileged location in one of the most touristic areas of the capital and for its appearance in famous films such as ‘The Day of the Beast’, by Álex de la Iglesia. Its vintage Schweppes neon sign and the old Capitol Cinemas sign towering above it have made it an icon of the city.

Today, the building houses the 4-star Vincci Capitol Hotel, while the ground floor is still home to the old cinema. As evening falls, the smell of popcorn fills the lobby, creating a cinematic atmosphere that is echoed in its décor, which is inspired by the great legends of cinema.

Renowned interior designer Alejandra Pombo used this premise for the design of the most special room in the hotel: the Tower Suite 360 by Cosentino, which is located just above the popular neon sign. The 50 square metre room offers spectacular panoramic views of the city, as well as a privileged view of another city icon, the Puerta del Sol clock, which is directly opposite.

A sculptural vanity unit worthy of the stars

The interior design of the suite is in a class of its own, resulting in a sophisticated design that draws on both the golden age of cinema and the style of the 1970s and reflects the atmosphere of a dressing room. Here, the Dekton Marmorio vanity unit, almost four metres long, occupies a central position and acts as the back of the headboard, which looks out onto the many windows that surround the suite.

“Thanks to Dekton, we have created a piece that looks like a sculpture,” says Pombo. In fact, its structure is not only artistic in form, but also rests on two geometric volumes clad in the powerful, warm terracotta of Dekton Umber and the deep, dark grey of Dekton Grafite.

Stylish patterns and textures

“I am obsessed by two Dekton features: on the one hand, its design, which is very close to reality. And on the other, its maintenance, especially in the retail sector, because when I visit the projects after a few years, they are as good as the first day, and that is the key for an interior designer,” concludes Pombo.

For the cladding of the stunning black freestanding bathtub, the interior designer combined two Dekton colours, Umber and Marmorio, which were cut into ten-centimetre strips to create attractive patterns that enhance the room’s Seventies style. Meanwhile, the shower walls eschew Umber’s hint of pink for a serene aesthetic, but still feature the striped cut to create a refined texture.
