It is said that a “church covered in sand” has been buried beneath Skagen’s white sandy beaches since the 17th century. Indeed, although it may be hard to believe, this town in Jutland, the northernmost region of Denmark, is famous for its stunning beaches and dunes. The town is a popular tourist destination, and one of the accommodation options it offers its visitors is the Ankerhus, an establishment that has been restored by RJ Arkitektur.

“The project involved the restoration of an over 100 year old house in the old town of Skagen, from its old-fashioned, dilapidated, luxurious appearance to modern Scandinavian luxury, with the focus on the new kitchen with a very functional island, the stylish and easy to maintain bathroom and the living room with an inviting electric fireplace, all of which was possible thanks to Dekton Aura 15,” says the studio.

Scandinavian style

When it came to the restoration, the studio respected the historical context of the building, which is so iconic that Legoland has a mock-up of it on display. Today, its interior reflects the purest Scandinavian design, with clean, straight lines, white and neutral shades, and an extraordinary and meticulous use of wood in all its finishes.

To achieve such warm, enveloping textures, RJ Arkitektur relied on the luminosity provided by Dekton Aura 15. Its white background crossed by dark marbled veins convinced the team of architects to use it, as for them “Dekton is a modern, beautiful alternative to marble. If you didn’t know it was Dekton, you’d think it was a natural stone. But unlike marble, Dekton has a unique feature: it is extremely resistant to wear and tear, easy to maintain and a very versatile material to work with.”

Bathroom, kitchen and living room

And finally, the living room, where Dekton catches the eye with its use in the fireplace, surrounding its perimeter and giving it a modern yet classic touch, the perfect effect aimed at respecting the building without compromising on technology and innovation. Because, according to Thomas Bach-Jensen, Cosentino’s Architect & Design Sales Manager, “the renovation of a historic house is almost synonymous with classic and well-crafted materials, and this project is a perfect example of how Dekton Aura blends with the beautiful architectural elements in a sober, high-performance way.”

Dekton is the star of the three most important rooms in the establishment. First, there is the kitchen, where the island not only doubles as a sink, but also doubles as an impromptu dining area thanks to its overhang and comfortable seating under the exposed white beams. Then there is the bathroom, where Dekton has been used for the shower area and also for the toilet and washbasin cabinet.
