The best oil mill in Spain prepares to welcome visitors with Dekton

Made from Picual olives and produced in an old olive mill located in the town of Ventas de Huelma, in 2021 Omed olive oil was awarded the Spanish Food Award for the Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil by the Ministry of Agriculture. Although it was in 2021 when all the media attention turned to this little town in Granada, the truth is that Omed had already received this award -the most prestigious in the world of olive oil in Spain- in 2017.

With an 18-year track record of success, including exporting 90% of its production, the next step was obvious for the García Casas brothers, the minds behind Omed: to turn the Las Mercedes oil mill, where their exceptional oil is produced, into a place of pilgrimage for lovers of the so-called ‘liquid gold’.

For this purpose they contacted GANA Arquitectura, a renowned Málaga-based studio with some of their buildings nominated as the best of the year and who have worked with well-known brands. The goal? The refurbishment and extension of the old mill into a completely renovated industrial and corporate building. “It was an ambitious challenge aimed at improving the existing processes at the factory and, at the same time, positioning this gastronomic benchmark on the international olive oil tourism scene”, the studio says.

“Professional, clean and honest” indoor (and outdoor) spaces thanks to Dekton

“As a place that can be visited, it was essential to create well-designed and well-finished spaces that conveyed an image of professionalism, cleanliness and honesty, in line with their product. It is a leap in quality that has been achieved thanks to the use of natural light, its ample spaces and the use of quality materials”, the studio further says.

Dekton was the material of choice for the flooring (in and outside), giving the whole an industrial and elegant touch. Specifically, the colours chosen were Lunar (a trendy reinterpretation of conventional cement with an off-white hue), Kreta (a grey shade with a matt texture inspired by traditional cement floors that evokes a sense of serenity), Sasea (a creamy-grey tone with a design full of details and reminiscent of Sahel limestone) and Strato (a realistic reproduction of a cement surface).

Dekton, the perfect choice for high-traffic areas

In addition to the flooring, GANA Arquitectura also used Dekton Lunar for the stairs and landings. The studio also opted for this innovative material for the counters, bars and tables used in different colours such as Laurent (in the showcooking bar and the tasting table) or Trilium (in the store counter) and also in the exterior. There, the terrace bar is made with Dekton Kreta, a color inspired by concrete surfaces. The architectural firm also relied on Cosentino for the natural stones, as in the top of the meeting table, made of Scalea Rain Forest Green marble, or the terrace counter, in Scalea Roma Imperial marble.

Cosentino’s innovative, ultra-compact and high performance surface was chosen not only for its stylish design, but also for its outstanding scratch, stain, fire and heat resistance properties. It is also very easy to maintain, a feature that is especially important in high traffic areas such as Omed’s facilities: all you need is a wipe with a damp cloth and neutral soap and it will be as good as new.

“Without a doubt, working with Dekton has been an interesting experience from which to learn about the handling and installation of large format pieces, taking cutting to a level beyond pure design and planning”.
