A 5 star renovation

Located near to the Gran Vía, very close to Plaza de España and the Fira exhibition centre, is the iconic Crowne Plaza Barcelona Hotel, which underwent a complete renovation in 2021. The renovation took place when the hotel became part of the international luxury hotel brand InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, and was done with the aim of achieving Five Star status and adapting to the elegant style of the renowned hotel brand.

To achieve this, Brime Robbins, the studio in charge of the redesign, upgraded the guest rooms, completely remodelled the main lobby and developed new concepts revolving around the restaurant area, for which they found their perfect partner in Dekton.

The InterContinental Barcelona Hotel currently offers 273 rooms, a 180 m2 presidential suite room and 17 junior suites rooms. In addition to this, the hotel has a 1,200 m2 spa, more than 3,000 m2 of meeting space and several bars and restaurants, one of which is mentored by a Michelin-starred chef.

Brime Robbins proposed an imaginative use of Dekton, Cosentino’s innovative, ultra-compact and high performance surface, showing its endless design possibilities for interior spaces.

In the words of the architects, the material was used in a variety of applications, “from bespoke fixed and mobile furniture to wall cladding, bar counters and open kitchens”.

Dekton Laurent for a cool atmosphere that breathes Art Deco

Dekton Laurent, a colour inspired by Port Laurent natural stone, was the chosen material for the bespoke tables designed by the studio itself and spread throughout the Gebre cocktail bar and lounges.

Its surface texture creates a play of shades that enhance the contrast of its tones, so that its golden veins dominate the space and bring warmth to its dark, cold background, which gives depth to the whole.

According to its creators, all this makes it ideal for this Art Deco inspired bar that “represents the essence of the earth in its coldest state”. The bar offers a menu of handcrafted signature cocktails with more than 200 different liqueurs conceived to create a sensory experience “connected to the world that surrounds us”.

Dekton Bergen, character and elegance

Inspired by natural Portobello stone, Dekton Bergen was the colour chosen for the bar counter and the back bar unit, the tops of the bespoke tables in the lounges, the side tables in the lounge area situated at the entrance of the hotel and the worktops in the auxiliary café area, which also serves as an anteroom to the meeting spaces.

Bergen seeks perfection in tone, structure and depth. To this end, it allies itself with the beautiful greyish veins with sculptural pattern running through its off-white background. It is a design full of character and elegance, just like the different rooms of this great hotel.

Dekton Khalo, the choice for a wow effect

Last but not least, Brime Robbins chose Dekton Khalo for the table tops and worktops of the Specialty Restaurant and the worktop in the open kitchen of the all-day restaurant.

Khalo is inspired by Patagonia natural stone, one of the most appreciated granites due to its unique structure and colour. Thanks to its polished finish, achieved through Dekton XGloss technology, Khalo features a spectacular shine that enhances its complex and colourful chromatic structure. Intense blacks, subtle golds and tan browns make up a genuine and unique colour on the market, designed for the most striking designs. A touch of contrast with a wow effect!

Dekton, much more than perfect design

“Dekton was very helpful when it came to giving unity and consistency to the whole project, as it can be used for different applications in the hotel sector: hot and cold areas, high use worktops, decorative areas…”, the studio says.

In fact, beyond its extraordinary design, the studio chose Dekton for its outstanding technical properties, such as its resistance to scratches, stains and thermal shock, as well as its very low water absorption. All this makes it an ideal material for cladding heavy duty surfaces where maximum efficiency is required.

Dekton: a sustainable choice

The InterContinental Barcelona Hotel holds the Biosphere certification, awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI), which ensures that the hotel complies with international sustainability standards.

The use of Dekton, a carbon neutral product throughout its life cycle, helped to achieve the Biosphere certification.

Dekton’s carbon neutrality is UN certified and confirms Cosentino’s good environmental management practices, achieved through the implementation of the best available techniques and the optimisation of processes. This results in greater energy and resource efficiency, the use of renewable electricity and sustainable mobility policies. In addition, the emissions produced are offset by investment in projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
