C.guide selects the 200 most significant works of contemporary architecture

  • The selection represents "the most relevant and hopeful ways of contemporary architecture" around the world.
  • The C.guide is an interactive global guide to contemporary architecture, developed by the Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea with the sponsorship of Cosentino.

The Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea (FAC) has announced a selection of the 200 most significant works of contemporary architecture worldwide, which are thus included in the C.guide. The list, entitled "200 Best", includes works from 1975 onwards that represent, according to the selection committee, "the most relevant and hopeful ways of contemporary architecture". It can be consulted at https://arquitecturacontemporanea.org/200best

The C.guide is an interactive guide to contemporary architecture with a global vocation, promoted by the Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea and sponsored by the Cosentino Group. After a long process of debate, its scientific committee has made this selection of 200 works, which are included in the guide with the highest rating (CCC), reserved for exceptional architecture, "that which by itself justifies a trip". The list is proposed as a representation of the plurality of strategies and approaches to deal with the complexity of the contemporary landscape.

According to the Fundación Arquitectura Contemporánea, the selection raises questions and tries to identify the most hopeful vectors of architectural practice: "We have traveled the world in search of projects that, instead of telling people how to live, ask them; that are committed to community life; that combine the highest technology with traditional building wisdom; that face the problem of rural depopulation; an architecture that recycles, that understands itself as a process and seeks equity".

The 200 works constitute a wide variety of architecture from all over the world. Spain, whose architecture has been so celebrated internationally in recent decades, is very present with 24 works. Other countries with an outstanding presence are China (18), France (14), Japan (11), the United States (11) and Germany (10). Latin America (25) and Africa (11) are also noteworthy, with a wide selection of projects rated as "excellent", although not always sufficiently recognized.

The list organizes these 200 works into different categories, which summarize the scientific committee's evaluation criteria. One of the main common points of the selection is the concern for sustainability: many of the works implement the core concepts of reuse, recycling and reduction; or apply construction processes with nature, taking into account non-human actors. Other recurring trends in the list are the dialogue of architecture with the historical strata of the place, the generation of public spaces for sociability or the integration of the local with the global.

C.guide encourages visitors to discover the selection by browsing through its maps, discovering and interacting with the content about the works, or using it as a travel guide when visiting them on site. "We hope that our selection brings contemporary architecture closer to society and advances its future roads," says the selection committee.
