Interior design studio DesignWerkstatt13 has recently completed an impressive project that redefines the integration of stone in urban living spaces. The project covers everything from kitchens to bathrooms, staircases, floors and toilets, and they sought to incorporate elements that would bring this material into the design, aiming to create a warm and welcoming environment, reminiscent of a small cave, “like the one in The Flintstones”, they joke, but updated.
To transform the space, they turned to DKTN, an ultra-compact, stone-inspired surface with a similar aesthetic. They specifically played with the colours Bergen and Arga, treating them as if they were making an ice sculpture. “To achieve the client’s vision, it was crucial that the DKTN slabs fitted perfectly and matched the mitre-cut timber fronts to the nearest micron,” explains the DesignWerkstatt13 team. Continuity in the veining of the material was essential to maintain the cave effect, with additional challenges such as the varying thicknesses of the slabs, which ranged from 4 to 20 mm.
A sense of naturalness and warmth
DKTN impressed the studio not only with its attractive design and range of colours, but also with its durability, texture and versatility in a variety of applications, from kitchen fronts to flooring and cladding. Unlike natural stone and granite, DKTN overcomes many challenges with a single material. In addition, “this ultra-compact surface is resistant to colour fading, even in strong sunlight, thanks to its robustness and ease of maintenance”, remarks the studio.
The client, a renowned figure in the country’s catering industry, was looking for a leitmotif that would reflect the professionalism, practicality and functionality of his home, as well as that of his famous restaurants. “I wanted a design that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also created a sense of naturalness and warmth,” stresses the DesignWerkstatt13 team.
For the client, DKTN is at the forefront of integrating natural beauty with the warmth and comfort of their home. With a strong focus on ‘look and feel’, DKTN is extremely durable and resistant to heat and scratching. It is also water and stain resistant, eliminating the worry of soiling. A must-have for professionals who spend their days in the kitchen.
