Dekton, a resistant and sustainable surface

This innovative and forward-thinking project by Four Architects has created a relaxing and welcoming space at a Manchester office building for commuters to shower and change after cycling into work.  Dekton in 4mm Kreta was specified for the walls and 8mm Lunar for the flooring, both from the Industrial collection, along with 11 Exelis shower trays in Nolita and three Silence basins in Miami Vena.

Dekton is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle, making it a truly sustainable choice perfect for climate conscious contractors.  It’s also highly durable as it’s resistant to UV rays, scratches, stains and thermal shock and it can also be used for wall cladding and flooring both inside and out for a fully co-ordinated look

An easy-to-maintain surface

“When it came to designing the shower block and bike store, we knew we had to use durable, hardwearing materials,” explains Matt Atkinson, Director at Four Architects.  “At the same time, the space needed to be easy to clean, hygienic and low maintenance as well as offering commuters and workers somewhere comfortable, warm and welcoming for them to shower and change after cycling into work then get changed again to cycle home.  We really wanted bespoke basin and shower sizes and it was Cosentino’s cut to size facility that enabled us to achieve this."

The whole project took around 12 weeks in total and this included tiling, laying the Dekton surfaces, installing showers, basins and the bike store.  The result is a really forward-thinking space that commuters can use to help get their working day off to a great start.  The eco-credentials of the Dekton also help to give this Manchester city centre office building a sustainable building solution.

Taking care of every last detail from the plate to the table

Food as a language of love. This is how renowned chef Aitor Jerónimo Orive sums up his passion for gastronomy, heritage of his homeland, the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain. “My grandparents are wonderful cooks and I always caught them in the kitchen, stirring a pot of hot, hearty and incredibly delicious food”, Aitor recalls. For Aitor, the logical step was to become a chef and open his own culinary space. So far, nothing unusual. Except that he opened his restaurant in Singapore, more than 11,000 kilometres away from home. It was there that he opened the Basque Kitchen, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Basque cuisine has become part of international cultural heritage.

Now, after several years of hard work that have earned him the appreciation of the general public, the Basque Kitchen by Aitor moves to the historic building The Fullerton Waterboat House, and does so under the guidance of the design studio Grey Matters, featuring Dekton as the reference material. “Moving from Amoy Street to its new location was a bold move that required careful planning. Redefining a brand that has such history and so much prestige is a task that must be handled with delicacy, sensitivity and the utmost care so as not to undermine all the hard work that the Chef and his team have put in over the last few years”, explains the studio.

Dekton Keyla and Silestone Eternal D’or

The design was to be minimal, bespoke and ultra luxurious. The choice of Cosentino’s surfaces, Dekton Kelya and Silestone Eternal D’Or, for the bar and cabinets was a logical step that improved both the performance of the space and the visual quality of the design. The result is a well-balanced palette of materials that creates a luxurious setting with high performance kitchen and bar areas that allow the Chef and his team to shine.

Beyond their design and finishes, both Dekton and Silestone provide highly resistant and easy to maintain surfaces that are perfect for kitchens, whether at home or in Michelin-starred restaurants, where the pace of work is hectic and each space must be planned to the millimetre.

The visual impact of large format Dekton

The new Liderim offices in Tel Aviv (Israel) exude elegance. Once in the reception area, there is an impressive desk made from a huge, seamless, large-format Dekton Aura slab. The effect is overwhelming, thanks to the use of the same material for the wall and ceiling cladding. The overall feeling is one of understated luxury, combining a material such as Dekton Aura, inspired by classic marble, with cement flooring and wood.

The desk has been created from several planes with a sought-after asymmetry, giving it movement and modernity, in contrast to the classic look of the finish itself. Dekton Aura, a colour from the Natural Collection, with grey to beige veining reminiscent of Calacatta and Carrara marble, contributes to this.

When the architect responsible for the project, Eli Hacohen, was asked why he chose Dekton Aura, the answer was clear: ‘I chose Dekton Aura for the Liderim offices because I wanted to convey understated luxury, and because of the versatility of the material for application as wall, ceiling and furniture cladding.’

Dekton, interior design down to the last millimetre

In the Liderim offices, everything is designed to create a welcoming atmosphere that invites employees and visitors to stay. To this end, the exterior features are integrated into the interior of the building, providing continuous visual communication, especially in the entrance, reception area and meeting rooms.

Everything has been controlled and meticulously executed. Nothing has been left to chance. Not surprisingly, the roof cutting and the wall cladding also required a great deal of precision and detailed planning. This was perhaps the main challenge of the project, which Hacohen successfully overcame thanks to the Cosentino team, which is always ready to provide technical solutions.

The choice of the same material, Dekton Aura, for the tables in the meeting rooms has been another success of the project. In addition to creating a cosy space, in combination with the beige leather chairs, the material connects with the reception area of the offices, strengthening the original creative concept. Dekton is also available in a thickness of only 4mm in its Slim version, which offers multiple possibilities as furniture cladding – table tops, cabinet fronts, and one-piece items such as side tables – without the disadvantages of natural stone, which is highly susceptible to scratches, liquids or sunlight exposure.

A well-designed LED lighting system, plant materials in the right places and plenty of natural light complete the final look.

Bezieling

The perfect symbiosis between kitchens

The Ti Trin Ned restaurant has become a reference in Danish gastronomy since 2001. Located in the old quarter of Fredericia, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, this restaurant takes its culinary offerings to an almost intimate level where diners and chefs share spaces. The experience had to flow, according to the concept of manager Mette Hvarre Gassner and chef Rainer Gassner, who have created a perfect symbiosis between a restaurant turned into an open kitchen and a ‘production’ kitchen. The result – one Michelin star.

To do this, it was necessary to merge two spaces with different characteristics and needs: on the one hand, priority was given to the aesthetic beauty of the surfaces, which had to complement the flavours of the menu; and on the other hand, it was essential to have a material that could be resistant to the thermal shocks, scratches and stains inherent in a busy kitchen. Dekton uniquely combines functionality and design, two features that make it truly attractive for professional kitchens all over the world.

“The resistance of Dekton represents exactly the attributes we are looking for, without compromising on aesthetics and design”
Rainer Gassner

Rainer Gassner

Domoos and Kreta for two working environments

During the development of the project it was important that the two spaces, i.e. the open kitchen and the ‘production’ kitchen, were interconnected yet physically separate. The solution was to use a combination of two textures: the dark, almost black texture of Dekton Domoos for the worktops and the wall cladding in the open kitchen, and the soft grey of Dekton Kreta, from the award-winning Industrial Collection by Cosentino, used in the 'production' kitchen.

It is in the latter where Dekton’s unique properties stand out. Its large format of 2700X1400 mm, which runs from floor to ceiling, provides a sense of continuity that also makes cleaning easier by reducing joints. Ti Trin Ned’s kitchen is one of the easiest to maintain in Denmark.

Eco-friendly aesthetics

Ti Trin Ned offers a type of cuisine that is deeply rooted in its natural environment, with ingredients firmly established in tradition and respect for nature. For Mette and Rainer Gassner to find a material that is as beautiful as it is sustainable was a matter of pure coherence. Dekton, as a carbon neutral product, meets this requirement perfectly.

“We are impressed by the features of Dekton and, at the same time, the concern for the environment and recycling that motivates Cosentino’s R&D. This is in line with our philosophy of respecting natural resources”.

A material that adapts to any need

First impressions are so important in business. That is why it was worth choosing the right solution to design the reception area of One South County, a building that attracts business and talent in equal measure. The wide and imposing reception desk has been covered in 20 mm Kira Dekton, a colour and format that captures the attention of all those who visit the premises.

Dekton is an ideal solution for commercial projects in spaces that experience intense activity and high traffic, thanks to the resistant nature of the material. It is highly resistant to scratches and stains, meaning it can also be easily cleaned. Another important highlight is the fact that the slabs can be manufactured in large formats or custom sizes, offering architects and designers a high level of precision.

The ideal vein for a formal setting

Kira’s delicately veined and warm grey colour is an irresistible complement to the linear patterns that play an important role in the decor of the reception area. Giving the impression of having been carved from a single piece of natural stone, the effect across the desk as a whole represents a true exercise in minimalism and simplicity.

One South County is a prestigious avant-garde 12,840 m2 building of five floors, designed by the award-winning architects of The O’Toole Partnership (TOTP). Furthermore, the South County Business Park is in a prime location of Dublin, easily accessible from anywhere in the city as well as from other surrounding counties such as Wicklow, Kildare, Meath and Louth. The main public transport lines pass through this business park, located approximately 9 km from Dublin’s city centre.

Maison Bab is a casual dining restaurant and culinary celebration of kebabs, located in Covent Garden, London. The second restaurant from founding partners, Stephen Tozer and Ed Brunet, its design is central to the relaxed vibe, boasting stylish interiors designed by Angus Buchanan. The ultra-compact Dekton® by Cosentino surface brand is featured throughout, from the bar to the tabletops, providing a striking repetitive design that brings the space together.

The two storey space has ample space for diners, with a combination of bar, booth and table seating. Upstairs, the kitchen is on show for an element of culinary theatre and a nod to the humble kebab shop found on every street corner in London. An on-trend colour scheme of greys, soft pastels and plenty of greenery complements the copper accents throughout, whilst the exposed extraction adds an industrial vibe that is amplified by black metal racking at the bar. Downstairs, glossy white and green subway tiles and candy-pink seating provide a retro touch.

Ideal for use in busy catering evironments, Dekton® offers a high resistance to scratches and stains, making it easy to maintain and keep clean. In addition, its high resistance to heat allows the chefs to plate up on the bar without fear of damaging the surface.

The latest addition to the Le Bab family from founders Stephen and Ed is Kebab Queen, a ‘restaurant within a restaurant’ situated in the lower level of Maison Bab and hidden behind the illuminated facade of a classic British kebab shop.

An adventurous and ambitious approach to dining, Kebab Queen invites guests to leave their fine dining expectations at the door with a completely plate-free experience. Headed up by Manu Canales, previously sous chef of London institution, Le Gavroche, the seven-course tasting menu has been influenced by Manu’s love for the flavours of kebab, cultivated during his trips across Turkey and beyond, combined with his rigorous Michelin training. The exclusive, intimate space welcomes up to ten diners at a time to enjoy dishes including Doner Risotto, complete with shavings of lambs’ tongues and ‘Got Milk?’ – freshly-baked, sticky milk buns inspired by Manu’s childhood.

Food is prepared in front of guests, who are seated on cobalt blue, leather-clad stools in a U-shape around the chef, with each dish plated directly onto a bespoke, heated Dekton® countertop in the colour Zenith. Crucial to the concept of Kebab Queen, Cosentino’s ultra-compact Dekton® surface provided the ultimate plate-free solution thanks to its hardwearing properties.

Co-founder, Stephen Tozer comments, “We wanted to create a restaurant and take away the plates – we wanted to serve dishes straight on to the counter in front of people. When you get in to the logistics of that, it becomes quite complicated. We heard about Dekton® and started speaking with Cosentino and they loved the idea of what we were doing. Dekton® blew our minds because it’s the only material that ticked so many boxes. It needs to be heat and scratch resistance and we need to be able to wipe it perfectly clean between courses. With Dekton®, we can do this! So it’s completely pivotal to the whole dining concept, there is no way we could have achieved this with anything else. It was the difference between being able to go plateless and not.”

Head chef, Manu Canales, adds, “Kebab Queen is the pinnacle of our project. We want diners to relax and get stuck in; it’s about combining the intense flavours of high end dining with the communal, elbow-to-elbow fun of the kebab shop.”

Perfectly suited to intensive use in this unique culinary experience, Dekton® boasts a high resistance to scratches, staining and heat. This makes it possible for hot pans to be placed straight down on to the surface during the plating up of dishes, and for the surface to be warmed from beneath ensuring food retains heat. Easy to clean, chef Manu wipes down the surface with a natural, food safe antibacterial spray between courses to ensure maximum hygiene and to avoid flavour transfer between dishes.

138m2 of Dekton and Silestone creating the feeling of freedom

There are restaurants designed with such attention to detail that diners find the interior as delightful as the food. In the grounds of São Paulo’s Museum of Image and Sound, Pipo serves a bold fusion menu for all five senses within an open-plan, airy space where food and nature are the stars. Dekton and Silestone surfaces form the basis for this delicious pairing.

Architects Renata Castilho and Camila Buciani, from RCB Arquitectura, wanted to create a relaxed, light-filled setting without architectural restrictions of any kind. The main kitchen opens onto the dining room, providing a live and direct view of the attention to detail that chefs put into every dish.

Dekton Orix; the colour of creation

Dekton Orix, from the Industrial collection, lends elegant and surprising tones to this creative workspace: the mixture of blues, greens and blacks gives a distressed concrete look to the worksurfaces and grill, a particularly sensitive area due to the high temperatures. With its high resistance to heat, Dekton perfectly fulfils aesthetic requirements as well as technical ones.

Orix has also been used on one of the restaurant’s walls, providing the sense of unity that the project’s architects were looking for.

See the light with Dekton Nilium

A calm, luminous space, decorated with simplicity yet pleasing to the eye. This was the overarching concept driven by Renata Castilho and Camila Buciani. With wood and ornamental plants playing a key role, the design needed a surface that would complement these elements and reflect the joyful dazzle of Brazilian life. Dekton Nilium, also from the Industrial collection, was a particularly attractive option.

Reminiscent of the fine, sparkling sand of Brazil’s beaches, Nilium has been used to create harmony between the key surfaces, such as tables, countertops and the walls of the bar and wine cellar. The harmonious result elegantly contrasts with the materials chosen for the kitchen. The feeling of freedom is enhanced by Nilium, a colour full of nuances like the golden and grey flecks that enrich its tone.

Finally, the Blanco Capri shade, in Silestone this time, was chosen to continue the light and airy feel of the restaurant all the way to the bathrooms, which gleam thanks to this pristine tone.
