If façades are a benchmark in commercial and industrial buildings for their ability to protect the interior while looking elegant on the outside, why shouldn’t they be the same for private homes? This is probably what the owners of this house in Denmark were thinking when they decided to commission Daniel Olesen’s joinery company, Bastrup Tømrerfirma.

Indeed, while the interior of a house should be warm, sophisticated, enveloping and cosy, the outer ‘shell’ that covers it all is a key element that should not be forgotten and should feature a number of specific characteristics adapted to the weather and harsh conditions that exist in some places.

Unique and inspiring architecture

In this case, it is a single-family home in a new residential area in Søndersø, a town in central Denmark in the municipality of Nordfyn, on the island of Funen. The proposal stands out for its unique, internationally inspired architecture, featuring a façade cladding with two contrasting designs: Dekton Lunar and Dekton Radium.

The house consists of two volumetric modules connected by a large window, which also serves as one of the common areas of the house, allowing natural light to flood into the interior spaces. This sought-after openness required strong yet malleable enclosures and materials that would give the project character and functionality.

Functional and versatile

“Cutting 4 and 8 mm Dekton slabs requires expertise and skill. However, the material is easy to handle, the result is perfect and the overall budget is reasonable. And most importantly, maintenance is minimal,” says Daniel Olesen of Bastrup Tømrerfirma.

Meanwhile, according to Thomas Bach-Jensen, sales manager and architect, “it is inspiring to see how Dekton is the key to this private, maintenance-free home in a small town, and how the product’s properties and versatility result in outstanding, forward-looking architecture.”

Creating contrast

The choice of products was intended to create contrast. And in this sense, Dekton Lunar and Dekton Radium were the best possible choice. Dekton Lunar is a reinterpretation of conventional cement inspired by industrial design with an off-white background that makes it very trendy. It is the perfect colour for outdoor spaces that seek neutrality and blend in with their surroundings.

Meanwhile, Dekton Radium has the appearance of rusted, acid-degraded steel and offers a design that perfectly combines warm ochre and brown shades with the fresh character of bluish and greenish tones. Last but not least, Dekton Radium is manufactured following a sustainable production approach and is made from 80% recycled materials.
