Woodcase House
Ayllón Paradela de Andrés
Madrid, Spain
The Madrid practice arranges the different scenes of 21st-century domesticity around a large wooden box.
In designing the house, Ayllón Paradela de Andrés responded to its anonymous and heterogeneous urban surroundings – single-family homes of different materials, colors, and shapes – with an abstract white volume altered only by large openings. Contrasting with the immaculate white is the oak wood of the central element, which is omnipresent in the house and has a visually warming effect on the interior.
This large wooden box within a box contains the different services while organizing the rest. There are practically no corridors and partitions, but the rooms have their fair share of privacy thanks to the spiral up the various mezzanines, which, located closer to the entrance, are given more communal functions linked to the garden, while the levels farther from it harbor the more private spaces.
