Located in the region of Da Nang, the building combines a café and a private home. Constructed with local materials (clay bricks) and forms recalling a cuckoo clock, it feels familiar to the viewer.
Three blocks rest on a rectangular larger one. Within this plinth we find the café: an indoor part and a garden outdoor one. The three blocks on top of it form the house, serving different functions, separated by partly covered in-between spaces.
Block A, which has two levels, contains the master bedroom; block B, also two-story, the children’s room and living room; block C, the kitchen and dining room.
In this house, rooms are separated not only by walls, but also by in-between spaces, additional places for interaction between the inhabitants. Buffers between indoors and outdoors, they can be used in different ways, intimately or more openly, while letting breezes reach all corners of the home, a welcome cooler in tropical climate.
