The feeling of entering a giant ‘cave’

When architect Jomana Lahham was asked to design the lobby of the G10 project in Nazareth, it was clear to her that she wanted to create a dramatic effect. The lobby of a residential complex is a place of connection between outdoors and indoors, and it is the first impression the tenant has after a long day away from home. This area should make the most of natural light during the day and provide soft lighting at night.

Inspired by a giant cave and using beautifully textured natural materials, Lahham creates a powerful experience of high ceilings and interplay of light and shadow with a huge Dekton Kelya wall cladding. This material features fine veins which give a sense of fluidity and the natural stone look that the architect likes so much. In addition, it provides a pleasant texture to offer warmth in this cosy space.

The architect turns the difficulty of a small, narrow lobby into its greatest strength by creating a dramatic and deep contrast through the use of a large, dark, veined material.

Dekton colours and textures, the perfect choice

When we asked the architect of this spectacular lobby why she chose Dekton by Cosentino for this project, her answer was clear. The wide range of colours, as well as textures reminiscent of natural stone, are the properties that make Dekton a very special material for her.

Jomana also explained the challenges and difficulties of this project and how much support she received from Cosentino’s team for professionals. The architect appreciated the fact that she was able to receive large samples or have different options in terms of colours and qualities during the execution of the lobby.

Once again, the material becomes the best tool to create a sensory experience for the architect’s creativity and people’s enjoyment.

Grand Paris Express

By 2021, the Paris metropolitan area will have almost 12.5 million inhabitants. It is by far the largest urban area in the European Union and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Whilst there are a number of urban challenges, inter-city transport around Paris is undoubtedly one of the most important.

In response to this growth, the French authorities have come up with an ambitious project, the Grand Paris Express (GPE), a public transport network consisting of 4 cutting-edge driverless metro lines. Over the next 15 years, a total of 200 km of new track between 64 stations will be built.

One of the key phases of a project of this scale is the construction of ‘pilot’ stations that will serve as a guide for the entire project. It was precisely in one of these stations, ‘La Fabrique du Metro’, where GPE managers turned to Dekton to test the possibilities of the material as well as the capacity of the Cosentino team to provide advice throughout the project.

“I believe this material will appeal to both users and station designers”
GPE Materials Manager: Didier BOURGEOIS

GPE Materials Manager: Didier BOURGEOIS

Ultra-compact surface to withstand heavy traffic

The stations of the Grand Paris Express will soon be used by tens of thousands of passengers every day. As a result, this type of public infrastructure is subject to very heavy wear for which not all floors are suitable. The ultra-compact Dekton material is specially designed for these challenges, as it is highly resistant to impact and scratches.

Furthermore, as a non-porous material, Dekton is easy to maintain, whether it is dirt and grime from daily traffic, or more aggressive stains such as graffiti. The Cosentino surface keeps its uniform colour even when exposed to abrasive elements that would damage other materials.

It is no wonder that these physical-mechanical properties, together with its limitless cutting possibilities, have captivated GPE's managers. But there is more to it than that.

Dekton iD, a blank canvas

Grand Paris Express is set to be a unique infrastructure in the world, featuring innovations in many areas of engineering and civil transport: from its trains operated automatically by means of algorithms and AI, to the use of materials specifically designed for the project, such as the Dekton surface customised with the Dekton iD service.

Dekton iD is a blank canvas, a customisation service that allows the architect or designer to choose from the thickness of the material to its cut, texture, finish and colour. And colour was precisely the key element in the search for distinction: there is room for many styles and architectural elements in 64 metro stations, so it was essential to find a neutral colour with character that would not clash with the different environments; this is how ‘Paris’, the customised colour for the GPE, was born.

Sustainability is no longer optional

More than a trend, the use of sustainable materials has become a requirement for any public works project. That is why Dekton, a carbon neutral product made from 99% recycled water and 100% clean energy, was perfect for this project.

After the tests at ‘La Fabrique du Metro’, the Grand Paris Express team know that they can count on Dekton not only for flooring, but also for other applications such as stairs, wall cladding or even station façades, an application that has made Dekton a benchmark in the market.

A visual impact of over 4,500 m2 of Dekton

The Cajamar building, located in southern Spain, is an ambitious architectural project. Its most interesting architectural feature is the aesthetic contrast created by three different types of façade: a large white volume of GRC photocatalytic panels, a Sirocco-colour Dekton ventilated façade, and a curtain wall protected by ceramic slats.

The aesthetic continuity of the building is another distinguishing feature. This effect is achieved thanks to Dekton’s outdoor flooring, in Danae colour, which is also discretely and elegantly used inside the building, cladding all the public access areas.

Dekton allows a continuous design, cladding all the walls of the building as if it were a second skin. Its high resistance to ultraviolet rays, freezing and thawing, its colour stability and its high resistance to stains make Dekton the perfect choice for exterior façades.

A floor designed to avoid the ‘heat island’ effect

The hue of the outdoor flooring had to be clear, with a Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) >78, to avoid the ‘heat island’ effect. Inspired by Roman travertine, Danae Dekton, a creamy matt finish colour, was perfectly suited to the building’s technical requirements.

The decision to use Danae Dekton indoors as well achieved the differentiation between the busiest and less used areas. Visually, you can see how the material flows from the outside to the interior areas, including the staircases, offering both warmth and consistency in design.

Thanks to the large size of the Dekton slabs, it is possible to create an image of great quality and beauty in the spaces where the material is used. From a functional point of view, its hardness and resistance to the wear and tear produced by constant traffic of people, make it a perfect product even for the busiest areas. Furthermore, its easy daily maintenance is a significant feature for busy buildings.

A project designed from a sustainable perspective

The new Cajamar headquarters has been awarded the LEED GOLD certification for sustainable buildings, granted by the US Green Building Council. This certification, issued by a specialised and independent agency, certifies that the building meets the highest standards of efficiency for sustainable buildings. It includes aspects related to energy efficiency, use of alternative energies, improvement of indoor environmental quality, efficiency of water use, development of sustainable open spaces and selection of the materials used.

A 25 million renovation that combines aesthetics and functionality

At the end of 2019, the time had finally come: After a three-year construction period, the Kreissparkasse Rottweil proudly opened its newly renovated headquarters. Customers are now welcomed in an innovative building with an open atmosphere, which meets the highest standards of modern advisory and service quality. Around 25 million euros were invested to renovate and expand the existing building dating from 1972. Ergonomically functional designer furniture now characterises the modern interior design. The stairs, the floors in heavily used areas and the walls of the sanitary rooms are covered with Dekton tiles from Cosentino.

Our new head office is the heart, the core of Kreissparkasse Rottweil, says Roland Eckhardt, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of the district savings bank of Rottweil. Currently, around 150 employees from various departments work together under one roof. The innovative Open Space concept can be used very flexibly and has the potential to accommodate significantly more employees or departments in the head office. Starting from the customer hall, the building, which has been expanded to a gross floor area of 9,900 sqm, was planned from the inside out in order to provide the best possible support for the bank's processes. Externally, a red-brown ceramic façade unites the old and new parts of the building; inside, it is the continuous floor covering.

Large-format tiles

Customers enter the building via wide steps on Königstraße, the main street. "Originally we had suggested natural stone floors here," explains Stefan Popp from the architectural office Broghammer Jana Wohlleber. "But the client was critical in view of the strains. In addition, the flooring was to be as extensive as possible, with only few joints. When we then saw the large-format samples for the KAP WEST in Munich exhibited by our facade builder App, we had an alternative: Dekton." The ultra-compact surface material consists only of inorganic natural minerals and is very durable and robust.

"The large formats, the robustness and the design of the material were decisive", says Popp. "What we also liked about using it as stair cladding: Dekton is solid-coloured, so that the bevelled edges have the same colour as the surface." Dekton Keon from the Tech Collection was chosen, which has a very modern and high-quality appearance with its light, concrete-like gloss. In addition to the stairs, the customer hall, public corridors, tea kitchens and canteen as well as the sanitary rooms were also fitted with Dekton tiles – a total of 1,700 square metres.

"We now have a sustainably beautiful floor covering that guides our customers through the building"
Thomas Santo

Head of Construction Organisation at the Kreissparkasse Rottweil

Carefully levelled

"To lay large-format tiles accurately, the floors have to be prepared very precisely", explains Erik März, site manager at tiler Fliesen Kugel. "Once the underground is completely level, the tiles are laid using the buttering-floating method." The ground and the tile are coated with a thin layer of mortar. Then the surface material is set with the aid of levelling systems. Lugs protruding from their plastic plates ensure an optimal distance between the tiles and, with the help of a wedge or pulling hood, allow for the precise levelling of two adjacent tile plates.

Once the mortar has hardened, the lugs are removed and the gaps between the tiles are grouted. On the floors, tiles of 1.40 m width were laid – 12 mm thick on the floor surface, 20 mm thick on the steps. On the entrance stairs of 6 m width, tiles of up to 2.60 m length were used, slightly offset so that the joints are hardly visible. Further stairways with 1.40 m wide steps were covered with continuous tiles. The wall panels in the sanitary areas with a width of 0.70 m were finished in 8 mm thickness. All tiles came from one batch and were called off in stages, ready cut to size.

Sustainably beautiful

"The size and weight of the panels do not necessarily make the work easy," says März, who, with his team on site, laid the large-format Dekton panels, which weigh around 30 kg per square metre, by hand. "But the processing – for example in the sanitary area – is easy with the right tools and the result is really impressive. Thomas Santo, Head of Construction Organisation at the Kreissparkasse Rottweil also agrees with this. "The efforts of all involved have been worthwhile. We now have a sustainably beautiful floor covering that guides our customers through the building. We are really very satisfied with the result".

Innovation begins with the surfaces

ONCE Group Spain have commissioned Domus Arquitectos studio to modernise an old industrial building in Camino de Hormigueras, Madrid. The aim of restoring the building is to house the logistics centre of the ONCE printing plant, a cutting-edge robotic plant.

Technology and innovation are the guiding elements of the project. With these two ideas in mind, and without forgetting the visual and functional aspects, the studio has chosen Dekton as the leading material for the different spaces.

Customised cuts to ensure visual continuity

The first visual impact is provided by the building's reception. The combination of Dekton Kelva dark stone, together with the steel and the programmable lighting, creates an overwhelming effect. This effect is intensified by cutting Dekton in large-format, which allows for visual continuity.

The reception desk, made of the same material, becomes a "sculpture". Designed and manufactured by hand, and fully cladded in Dekton, it required precise laser cutting and error-free handling. The result is a monolithic block reminiscent of materials taken from quarries in one piece.

Dekton is also used for flooring in common areas and bathrooms, in 3.2 x 1.4 metre slabs, achieving a striking effect.

Industrial functionality embracing design

The project consisted of the restoration of an old industrial building to be used for three purposes: the ONCE logistics unit, the administrative control centre for this unit, and a small auditorium for events.

In industrial buildings, design and materials are often neglected for the sake of practical production. However, Domus Arquitectos, in collaboration with the project's construction company, Ferrovial, has gone for a very advanced design in accordance with the machinery to be incorporated in the plant, and for the use of materials with a technological finish. Dekton thus presents itself as a resistant, versatile and design solution for use in industrial environments.

A unique and sustainable project

Located in the heart of Riga, Origo shopping centre has recently been transformed into a hub of intense economic and social activity.

The building has been extended with six new floors with offices, restaurants and an underground car park. Cosentino ultra compact surface, Dekton, has been used for the flooring and stairs. The key reasons for choosing Dekton have included its BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) high score, and its great resistance to the high pedestrian traffic.

Thanks to Cosentino’s Dekton iD service, it has been possible to create a bespoke “clock” design which has been used on floors, creating an avant-garde space.

Dekton iD, limitless designs

The main visual attraction of the new facilities lies in the clock embedded in the flooring of one of its central squares. Customized pieces fitted together like a puzzle and creating a high-impact visual sensation from Sirius and Danae colours.

Dekton iD service includes personalised advice from Cosentino's R&D team together with the architectural studio, with the aim of customizing Dekton slabs to create exclusive colours, unique patterns, original textures and finishes.

A material suitable for any application

The Spanish Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 brought together imagination, architecture and innovation to create a timeless design. Inspired by a twin-unit greenhouse with a portico structure, the b720 Fermín Vázquez architectural studio used Dekton ultra-compact surface to create all kinds of applications, from planters to bartops, stairs and flooring. Overall, more than 1,000 m2 of material, cut-to-size and with different finishes, was used.

Under the premise of combining tradition with innovation, the aim was to combine noble materials, such as wood, with cutting-edge technology. Architects and interior designers carried out an interesting experiment that was made possible thanks to the customisation possibilities of Dekton iD: to evolve from the greenhouse to the tomato, and from the tomato to its genome.

Dekton iD, a blank canvas

Thanks to Cosentino's Dekton ID service, professionals can customise Dekton slabs to the very last detail. Exclusive colours, specific thicknesses, customised textures and, as in the case of the Spanish Pavilion, the possibility of printing patterns, drawings and letters directly on the surface using inkjet technology.

Under the slogan "The language of flavour", Fermín Vázquez´s studio designed the recreation of the tomato genome, one of the greatest recent achievements in the field of biotechnology. To carry out the task successfully, the studio chose Dekton Zenith large format slabs, 2 cm thick. The letters of the genome as well as the representation of the tomato itself are imprinted on the surface of the material, without compromising either its resistance properties or ease of maintenance.

A design service to create experiences

The Spanish Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 spanned more than 3,000 m2 and included several areas: an auditorium or multi-purpose room, an exhibition area, a vegetable garden, a restaurant and workshops. In short, a number of very specific demands that required a material capable of withstanding intensive use. Thanks to its low porosity, Dekton makes daily maintenance easy, and is recommended for high traffic areas.

Its technical features make Dekton a key material for the requirements of projects intended for the general public; Dekton iD service makes the experience unforgettable.

A refurbishment that looks to the future

The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, is strategically located on a small peninsula in the Caspian Sea. It is a historical link between the East and West, and its international airport is proof of this. The redevelopment of Heydar Aliyev not only allowed the airport to include more flights, but also completely changed its .appearance. Today, this key facility for the country, is an architectural benchmark as functional as it is attractive.

The outdoor flooring refurbishment was one of the main changes that the government authorities required. They were looking for a futuristic appearance, in line with the city's new architectural projects, such as the ‘Flame Towers’, where striking geometric shapes capture the attention of those who look at them. The customization possibilities of the Dekton iD service resulted in a unique design.

Image of Baku Airport 2 Dekton iD 1.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&ixlib=php 3.3 in Baku Airport - Cosentino
Image of Baku airport 5 dekton id 1.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&ixlib=php 3.3 in Baku Airport - Cosentino

Dekton iD, customization in detail

The Baku airport captivates the traveller from the minute they enter, as they are greeted with extensive Dekton flooring, consisting of equilateral triangles of 1.5 metres side length, which was designed especially for the entrance. The chromatic variation in three shades of Sirius colour -specially created for this design-, together with the geometric shapes, produce a striking 3D effect of raised cubes that is reflected in the window of the main entrance to the building.

With the Dekton iD service, it is possible to customize Dekton slabs down to the smallest detail, from the cut and colour - as in this Project -, to the texture and finish. Overall, the entrance to Baku airport results in a continuous flow where the tone of Sirius slate forms a natural extension of the building's façade, which is also clad with triangular glass panes.

A material that preserves chromatic homogeneity

In any large architectural project, outdoor flooring is a complex space that is constantly exposed to sunlight, high pedestrian traffic and thermal contrasts, which can generate material damage or colour degradation. Thanks to its composition and aesthetic properties, Dekton overcomes these challenges and guarantees both colour resistance and homogeneity, that remain unchanged over time.

With five million passengers a year, Baku airport is a major transportation hub not only for Azerbaijan, but for the entire Middle East region, and has become a unique architectural reference.

A flooring system designed to withstand everyday stress

The Vega area is expected to grow to around 10,000 inhabitants and approximately 4,200 people are expected to commute from the station. This has given an improved public transport through Vega station where trains stop on every 15 minutes for most of the day. Given the high level of passenger traffic, the architectural project required the use of a material that was resistant to the daily hustle and bustle and also facilitated the maintenance and cleaning of the floors.

Finally, the architects chose Dekton because it is an extremely impact, scratch and abrasion resistant product. In addition, floors equipped with Dekton have a high resistance to both UV radiation and low temperatures.

Availability was key at the station and the passenger spaces at Vega station are adapted for travelers with disabilities or traveling with a wheelchair, walker and stroller.

They selected brownish black Dekton Keranium from the Industrial collection in combination with a sandy limestone look through Dekton Danae from the Natural Collection for this project. According to Architect Torbjörn Gudmundsson, “It was a challenge to implement Dekton in an organization owned by the Swedish State. They were very demanding about certificate and test result. It was important with the slippery resistance and the reflection value. Two main criteria were also the durability and abrasion resistance of our material Dekton”

“Terazzo has been used for so many years and projects, they were looking for a new design for this project. Dekton was the design they were looking for.”
