The first co-living project in Helsinki

Noli Studios is the first co-living project developed by NREP (Nordic Real Estate Partners) in the historic neighbourhood of Katajanokka, in Helsinki. For this first project, NREP wanted the best partners and therefore entrusted the renovation and interior design to dSign Vertti Kivi & Co, a company with extensive experience in office, restaurant and hotel projects.

The project involved a change of use of a 1940’s office building. Work began at the end of 2016 and was completed three years later, in October 2019. A total of 263 studios of between 18 and 24 m2 were built, with a total built-up area of 12,000m2. In short, a project of significant scale that needed to “do well” in order to be replicated in other Helsinki neighbourhoods. Indeed, NREP opened a second co-living in November 2020 and expects to expand to a further ten new hotels in the next five years.

The renovation process was not without its challenges. For the renovation of the façade, the dSign team was forced to completely remove the old brick façade, even out the different floor heights and level the original concrete pillars. For three years, architects, contractors, site managers and even the Finnish Heritage Agency made a huge effort to meet the deadlines.

Silestone & Noli Studios: a successful partnership

Of all the suppliers involved in the project, Cosentino played a key role in supplying the kitchen worktops for the 263 studios and common areas. Given its high brand recognition in the Nordic countries and its extraordinary performance in semi-public spaces, Silestone emerged as the best choice.

Silestone Blanco Orion, an off-white surface with small, grey veins that create a feeling of cleanliness and spaciousness, was the chosen finish for the studio kitchens.

On the other hand, Silestone Merope was the choice for the communal kitchens. With this black finish, the aim was to create the opposite effect: a more welcoming and cosy atmosphere in the large and impersonal communal kitchens.

Perfectly combined with natural stone

In June 2019, the Anarchitect studio completed this stunning luxury villa of more than 3,000m2 of gross floor space, in Dubai Hills, winner of the Interior Design of the Year 2019 (CID Awards). This private home is designed according to the principles of modern architecture, using large volumes of natural stone. The two-level home has a beautiful interior courtyard that allows air and natural light to enter and connects the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The use of natural stone throughout the project relates to the harsh weather conditions of Dubai and the studio’s taste for ‘mouldable’ handcrafted materials. In the case of the open kitchen and bar area, the client specifically wanted a material that, in combination with natural stone, would withstand the demands of family and social life. DKTN Kelya stands out as the best solution, just like the Boffi kitchen and the bar designed by the Anarchitect studio.

DKTN Kelya is a material from the Natural Collection in a black colour with fine light veining reminiscent of dark marble. In this project, it has been used for the worktop of the kitchen island and the bar in the social area of the home. The contrast between the black Kelya and hazelnut-coloured wood creates a warm and cosy mix of colours and textures.

A ‘social’ and very versatile home

Dubai Hills Villa is a good example of the new concept of housing as a multifunctional space where wellness is combined with entertainment, social life and home office. In this home designed to host and enjoy leisure events, show-cooking and cocktails play an important role. Hence, the materials chosen must meet the highest expectations.

The bar is a unique Anarchitect design in oak wood, beautifully blended with natural stone and the DKTN Kelya worktop: several planes with a balanced asymmetry. The same materials are used for the wall cladding, giving a glimpse of a complete wine cellar.

Such a highly acclaimed and award-wining project would not have been possible without the teamwork between different disciplines. Other firms have collaborated with Anarchitect: BW Interiors as contractors, Urban Landscapes for structural work, John Cullen for lighting, Carter Associates as project managers and H&H Studios for decoration and furnishings. Congratulations to all of them!

Nature as a starting point

Drita means light in Albanian. But a very special light, like the one reflected by the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea and the creamy colour of Albania’s sandy beaches. Drita Kafè is a small café which recreates an atmosphere of idyllic nature and endless summer in Piana degli Albanesi, a small mountain village embedded in Sicily and founded over five centuries ago by Albanians.

History, tradition and modernity come together in this café to offer the typical Sicilian ‘cannoli’, as well as a variety of local pastries and cigars. At Drita Kafè everything is designed to please the senses. And here, the DKTN surface, in its striking Entzo colour, plays a perfect role.

How to expand the possibilities of a reduced space

DKTN Entzo recreates a Calacatta marble that captures the warmth of light; its steamy golden shiny veins give it a unique personality that enriches any interior space. The designer and engineer Giusy Scalia has cleverly used this feature to illuminate and enlarge the small, narrow premises.

The 0.8cm thick DKTN Entzo surface has been used to clad the walls of the table area, continuing down to the floor to give a sense of uniformity that creates two different spaces in this café; a radiant and welcoming space, to enjoy the pastries, and another more intimate one, the service area, where the wood tones have been combined in different intensities.

The ensemble is completed by the tables and bars, also in DKTN Entzo - 2.0cm and 1.2cm thick respectively - which, in addition to offering a very attractive design, provide the owners of the Drita Kafè with non-porous surfaces that are easy to clean and highly resistant to scratches and wear and tear of time, like the spirit and tenacity of the Albanians who founded Piana degli Albanesi.

Flooring, table cladding and display counter

A fresh new look for a classic style establishment

The patisserie Glea, run by the young chef Abel Bravo and located in the historic centre of Murcia, first opened its doors in November 2020. It is housed in a traditional establishment, at number 4 Barrionuevo Street, and sells innovative and distinctive sweet treats, with a focus on fresh ingredients.

Although the establishment is housed in a classic style building, its renovation conveys innovation and modernity, in line with the values of the new patisserie. For this, interior designer Alexia Martínez, together with architect Pedro Francisco, has relied on DKTN for the renovation process.

For the flooring, the chosen material was DKTN Kreta, from the Industrial collection. Inspired by polished concrete, DKTN Kreta evokes a seamless effect, making it perfect for use as a base colour to be combined with bold finishes. For the tables, the interior designer has opted for DKTN Kelya, a material inspired by dark marble which features light veins and creates a very unique atmosphere.

Impressive display counter in DKTN Bergen

The focal point of this establishment is undoubtedly its large display counter designed as if it were a monolithic totem. This starring effect is achieved in two ways: firstly, by placing the finest sweets in Murcia within easy reach; secondly, by choosing a material with a strong visual presence and character such as DKTN Bergen.

DKTN Bergen is part of the DKTN Stonika collection. Inspired by natural Portobello stone, it is reminiscent of Greek sculptures, with marked greyish veins on an off-white base. When used on the display counter, it greatly enhances the presentation of products, elevating the sweets to the status of almost divine delicacies.

Interestingly, the name of the patisserie, Glea, means “land” in Murcian Spanish, an allusion to the importance of using local ingredients and products. This philosophy fits perfectly with that of DKTN by Cosentino, committed to sustainability and certified as a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle.

DKTN, glass and wood in perfect balance

Architect Moshe Zion explains proudly the inspiration behind his latest project, Villa Rosh Hanikra, a villa located in a kibbutz in the north of Israel, on the Mediterranean coast. The sea views from the villa are an inseparable part of the house and the unifying feature connecting the interior with the exterior. Taking this view of the sea as a starting point, Zion has designed an open, transparent space with clear views over the garden and pool.

The aim? To create a contrast between the coldness of the materials with the appearance of concrete and glass and the warmth of wood. The different planes in DKTN Kelya and DKTN Soke respond to this aim, also creating a sense of dynamism on the façade.

The choice of a material with the appearance of concrete creates a very industrial and trendy look. Large terraces with wooden floors and glass balustrades are the perfect counterpoint to the concrete effect. The warmth of the wood and character of the open-plan kitchen, with its impressive DKTN Radium island connecting the interior with the pool area, embrace the visitor as they enter the home.

The challenge of updating a rustic style home

The major challenge of this project was to revamp a rustic style home with a tiled roof into a modern and inspiring design. In terms of look and feel, no one would think that this house is a renovation of a traditional style home. The “miracle” was made possible by the large DKTN surfaces installed on the aluminium structure.

This modern concept is also evident in the design of the interior spaces of the house, perhaps the most obvious example being the kitchen, seamlessly connected to the view of the sea and the outdoor area. The large island, which also serves as a bar, provides an open and highly functional meeting area, matching the design of the rest of the house.

A façade renovation is probably one of the most visually impactful solutions to transform a house without significantly changing its internal structure. In the case of the Villa Rosh Hanikra, the result is so spectacular that it looks like a newly built house.

Bringing contemporary into life with DKTN

Being the exclusive sole distributor of cutting-edge kitchen appliance brands FALMEC and FOSTER in South Korea, MAXTIME has successfully enhanced its showroom experience through the use of innovative materials by Cosentino.

As a distributor and retailer, a successful retail showroom design is an important aspect of MAXTIME’s business strategy. Cosentino is proud to be creating value in and around MAXTIME’s new showroom and office that effectively expresses the identity of the company.

Located in Seocho district, Seoul, MAXTIME’s showroom and office building boasts a trendy, geometric design concept in which DKTN Trilium and DKTN Sirius take prime focus as a façade. DKTN Trilium’s industrialised look of rusted steel lends the perfect touch to create an extremely distinct and edgy look to the building. DKTN Sirius complements the edgy Trilium with its textured visual sensation and subtle greenish touches by bringing realism and strength as visitors enter the building.

A total 350-sqm of DKTN Trilium and 50-sqm of DKTN Sirius envelop the building, both in 20 mm thickness.

DKTN stands the test of time and weather

Aesthetics and resistance to Seoul’s extreme weather were two important requirements for this project where temperatures can soar as high as 35°C and drop to as low as -20°C.

DKTN’s superior performance makes the material a great choice for such a demanding architectural project. DKTN not only improves functional performance of the façade with respect to heat reduction and insulation, it also increases weather protection and durability with its UV resistance, stain resistance and long-lasting colour fastness.

Bildnummer 187 des aktuellen Abschnitts von Maxtime - Seite 2 von 4 von Cosentino Deutschland

Design with commitment

DKTN Trilium is also the first recycled colour within the DKTN line, thereby improving the overall sustainability of the building. Ultracompact surface DKTN is now officially recognised as a carbon neutral product since 2020.

Within the building, 80-sqm of DKTN Trilium in 8 mm thickness continues to line the walls of common corridors with its somehow metallic effect, creating a seamless transition and connection with the outside surrounding.

In addition to façade and wall cladding, a multitude of Cosentino surfaces are integrated into the showroom space as worktops to complement MAXTIME products, including: Kelya, Aura, Korso, Domoos, Entzo, Kira, Arga, Sirius and Lunar for DKTN colours; Urban Frost, Arden Blue Volcano and Pearl Jasmine for Silestone colours and, finally, Sensa Black Beauty.

DKTN perfectly adapts to every application

The LD Sevilla hotel is located in the north of the Andalusian capital, next to a service area and motorway exit. This strategically located hotel does not compromise on style, offering its guests a distinguished experience based on quality services and attractive designs. VAU Arquitectura has been in charge of the hotel's design. The architecture studio relied on DKTN’s ultra-compact surface for a multitude of applications, using 3,100 m2 in the building.

From the exterior façade, which must withstand high levels of solar radiation, to the always busy common areas, such as restaurants and toilets, DKTN's unique features perfectly meet the needs of a bustling hotel.

Bildnummer 213 des aktuellen Abschnitts von LD Sevilla - Seite 2 von 4 von Cosentino Deutschland

A façade with personality

Alejandro Rivero, the architect in charge of the project, took care of every detail of the design. Starting with the façade itself: "We wanted a cladding that would enhance the horizontal joints while concealing the vertical ones. This way, we could highlight one of the hallmarks of the building, which is precisely its horizontality".

The standard slabs (3200x1440 mm) were cut to three different heights (700 mm/350 mm/175 mm). These were adapted to the façade, which is characterized by different heights, sizes and cantilevers. For these reasons, we needed a versatile and adaptable façade material, something like a tailor-made skin. The slabs were deliberately placed in different stripes, without following a pattern, which creates an interesting contrast, a sort of 'disorder within order'.

A colour range inspired by nature

DKTN Keon was chosen from the wide range of colours for the façade. This colour is reminiscent of the variable granite formations and surfaces found in the surrounding area.

DKTN’s resistance and low levels of absorption make it ideal for the demanding, daily requirements of a hotel. DKTN Laos, Soker and Sirius colours have been used for the surfaces in the cafeteria and the guests’ bathrooms.

A material that takes care of details

The LD Sevilla hotel has an outdoor terrace that offers stunning views of the Andalusian capital, a place where you can enjoy a drink at the bar, which is also made with DKTN.

And last but not least, DKTN has been used to clad the main hall, softening the transition between exterior and interior. The versatility of the material, together with some details such as the die-cutting of façade pieces for backlit signs and vents “helped us to solve many technical issues of the project”.

The final result is "a building of clean lines with horizontal stripes enhanced by strong horizontal joints, where we have tried to create a powerful, unified image while maintaining attention to detail".

Character and exoticism

Quipu restaurant offers the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature as a visual, aesthetic and gastronomic experience. And it does so by evoking the most authentic Peru: furniture made from natural elements and earth colours that recreate a traditional Peruvian home and invite you to taste the best of creative Andean cuisine.

The interior design of the establishment has been the work of Javiescobar Interiorismo, an interior design studio that has taken advantage of natural elements such as wood, natural stone and rattan to create a unique atmosphere. DKTN has also contributed to this atmosphere with its Liquid Embers colour, which has been used for the bar top.

“We chose Liquid Embers for its dark colour with blue tones and, at the same time, because it embodies elegance and freshness. The charcoal colour of the material reminds me a lot of fire and coal, and in this project we wanted to focus on nature and natural elements”, explains the studio.

“DKTN is a really user-friendly material for cooking”

DKTN, comfort for every situation

Having met the design criteria, the studio sought durable and robust materials that wouldn’t get damaged by daily use and challenges of a restaurant. “No other material provides the hardness and rigidity that DKTN offers. It provides amazing versatility for such a demanding live cooking bar top: you can use it to place a hot wok or as a chopping board ... it’s a really user-friendly material for cooking, especially in a Peruvian kitchen that requires a lot of fire and heat for cooking. ”

The ultra-compact DKTN surface is especially recommended for applications involving temperature contrasts as well as for use as a work surface suitable for all types of businesses, as its physical-mechanical properties make it highly resistant to scratching, easy to clean as it is a non-porous material, and it is even fire-resistant.

A comprehensive refurbishment designed to last

This architectural project involved the remodelling and extension of an existing building in order to house the headquarters of our client, Grupo Delgado. EAU Arquitectura studio designed a comprehensive refurbishment of the building, which extends from the basement, intended to provide parking spaces, to the top floor, for both staff and executive offices.

The aim of the refurbishment was to create open and light spaces oriented towards functionality but also with a marked aesthetic character. Cosentino materials, DKTN and Silestone, were key to achieving this combination both indoors, highlighting the furniture and flooring, and outdoors, featuring a ventilated façade designed to withstand the temperature changes and exposure to sunlight typical of central Spain.

“Thanks to their size, lightweight and durability, Cosentino materials have allowed us to go one step further”.

DKTN, lightweight and resistant surfaces

During the refurbishment of the building, the original façade was completely demolished in order to plan a new one that would meet two needs: design and durability. “We wanted a contemporary, refined and simple design, without embellishments, that would provide sobriety to the building”, explains the architecture studio, which is why DKTN in colours Warm White and Domoos was chosen for this project.

For the construction of the ventilated façade, the studio used large format DKTN panels, which allow such cladding thanks to its lightness compared to other materials - DKTN is available in thicknesses up to 4 mm-. “We managed to reduce the weight of the façade compared to other materials such as precast concrete or stone, which would have required the use of a more complex substructure as well as waterproofing the material from time to time in order to prevent discolouration, dirt, water absorption…”

DKTN's physicochemical properties, such as its resistance to UV rays, its low porosity and resistance to frost and thawing, make it possible to obtain a material that remains practically unaltered outdoors without the need for long-term maintenance.

Scratch-proof design furniture

The star of the ground floor is the lobby, designed to allow natural light to flood the space and facilitate the flow of both staff and visitors. Large format DKTN slabs in Warm White, Domoos and Blanc Concrete were used for the flooring, thus reducing the number of joints, enhancing visual continuity and facilitating maintenance. “For us it was very attractive because of its scratch resistance and anti-slip properties”.

The bespoke reception in DKTN Entzo is the focal point of the lobby. Its interesting veining provides elegance and is reminiscent of the Calacatta marbles, but with a beautiful golden shade.

A whole collection of furniture, including tables and counters in Aura 15 and Domoos, was also designed. The use of Cosentino materials is extended to the washbasins, featuring the model Silence in Silestone Iconic White.
