"Dekton is one of the most interesting, durable and beautiful products of our time. Love the 4mm option for splashbacks and cladding and have used it quite extensively in some of our residential projects."
Interior Designers Sarah Knox and Heidi Coffey, from Eskay Design both never intended to work in the industry of design, despite always having a love for it. Both, Sarah and Heidi began their careers in tile stores and from there never left the industry. After beginning their own families, they decided to join forces and have never looked back.
Where or with whom did you train?
Heidi took a little less formal path into the industry. Heidi never formally studied at university or TAFE, but rather gained hands on experience.
What was your first project
Sarah and and Heidi's first project together at Eskay Design was a large commercial project.
Who inspires you the most?
``I do not have any specific role models; however, I love to watch Grand Designs, especially the Australian version... Frank Lloyd Wright has also been an Architect that I have been fascinated by throughout my career in design, blending his architecture into its surrounding landscape is an ethos that is still followed closely today. Form and Function.``
Heidi.
``I was lucky enough to attend an interview with David Hicks who I think is an amazing Australian designer, he delivers luxe homes and beautifully layered products but is completely down to earth and speaks openly about his own journey in the industry.``
Your favourite colours?
Inspiring design period or styles
``If I had to pick one, there are elements of Mid-Century Modern that I love, that can be blended seamlessly into a contemporary home.``
Sarah.
``I am a huge fan of the Japandi style and ethos. Simplicity and Function are two of the most important considerations in any project and I love how the melding of Scandinavian and Japanese influencers capture this perfectly.``
Sarah.
"Commerically - many years ago we completed a full office design and all selections where we were given a blank canvas and very few restrictions. Our client was incredibly innovative and not afraid to think outside the box. As a designer this gives us so much creative freedom an the ability to produce amazing projects."
Heidi.
"I once specified a yellow house for an elderly couple. Not normally my style at all but it was their dream to live out their years together in a little yellow house and they were so happy. That memory has stayed with me since then! No better project than one that the client absolutely loves."
Applications and use of Cosentino materials
``We have used Dekton products, due to their durability and its versatility in both residential and commercial projects. The colour range is second to none, with the bonus of different textures. It's sustainable production is also a huge drawcard for us.``
Vision for the future
Sarah believes "the way we view our homes as our sanctuary has changed so much over the last five years. Home design is much more considered, evaluation how each space is to be used and what elements need to be incorporated for maximum comfort is more important than ever."
Sarah and Heidi both believe the shift from cold grey tones of recent design trends is moving back towards more warmth and fun, vibrant colours.
Materials trending
"Natural stone is still the current trend setter for materials. Where and how we use this material pushes the boundaries and creates far more exciting finished products than ever before."
Biggest Challenge
Sarah.
"Confidence. The design industry is so visual and subjective and like most designers I know you always have an element of self doubt. I've learned that it is so important to be honest in business, especially with your clients, do your research and back yourself!"
Heidi.
"Riding the wave of the building industry has presented many challenges, especially over the last few years. What we have learned from this, is to embrace every single contract, every client and every contact that you meet. As this may one day in the future lead to another amazing project."
Design desires for the future
"An international hotel with a generous budget. From initial design stage, to full design selections, to fitting out the furniture and the last accessory detail - this would be a dream!"
The priority: SUSTAINABILITY
``Besides choosing brands that have great environmental ethics one of the most simple things that everyone can do is to embrace considered design. Choose pieces that are quality, will stand the test of time and avoid contributing to the throw away society. A small but easy change no matter your budget.``
"Design should be thoughtful, not over thought. It is a journey full of emotion. Going through this with our clients is what makes design a part of who we are”
