The task facing Michelle McIlroy from interior design studio Inherent Design was far from simple. Situated in the suburbs of Auckland, New Zealand, the project involved adapting a family home to accommodate two generations, balancing contemporary flair for the younger members with a touch of classic appeal for the elders.
Getting the style right from the entrance was therefore crucial. In the quest to combine durability, strength, elegance and design in the home, Cosentino’s range of Dekton finishes was the clear choice. Indeed, when asked about the most striking architectural and decorative feature of the project, McIlroy does not hesitate to highlight: “The entrance hall floor, finished in Dekton Portum. As you enter the house, you are immediately struck by the sheer size and grandeur of the slabs”. A statement of intent in every sense of the word.
To maintain continuity between the different rooms in the house, Inherent Design extended the use of Dekton Portum to the floor of one of the bathrooms. The choice of this light colour, accentuated by its grey veins, gives it an elegant feel similar to that of the entrance.
Dekton throughout the home
To provide contrast and cater for the intergenerational nature of the home, the open-plan kitchen, which is integrated into the living and dining areas, features a black finish, specifically Dekton Laos, on the worktop, splashback and island. With its dark and weathered tones, this colour reflects the personality of industrial design, reinterpreting it and showing its most innovative and modern side. Its grey veining and warm tones give it great appeal, and together with its soft matt finish, make it the ideal choice for creating most of today’s contemporary spaces.
One factor to consider was durability, as the designer herself explains: “Durability was an important factor. Our customers are keen cooks and we needed a surface that would resist stains. It had to look as good as the day it was installed. Dekton is so versatile in its different thicknesses that I was able to craft a design that would adhere to units, worktops, walls and floors. It is a unique product because I can rely on its performance throughout the project”.
For the same reason, Dekton is also used in the kitchen diner, in this case in the colour Sirius. This black colour with a textured visual feel and greenish touches brings realism and strength to any space.
