The best ideas for fitting an ensuite bathroom

If you are not lucky enough to have an ensuite bathroom at home, you must have asked yourself on more than once occasion if you could fit one in somewhere, for a little bit of extra privacy. This is especially true for those sharing a house and in need of their own space, even more so if there are children, as the other bathroom is probably constantly in use.

Depending on the needs of your family, you may only need to fit a toilet and basin to help ease the use of the main bathroom. Or you may have a room with some extra space and are thinking about fitting a full bathroom with a shower or bath.

A bathroom can be fitted anywhere, from small bedrooms to large suites, but this must be done with the help of interior design and architecture professionals as it requires a certain level of technical knowledge.

Can a bathroom be fitted anywhere in a home?

The good news is yes! Nowadays, you can fit a bathroom wherever you like, even if there is no nearby drain, thanks to electric incinerators and impulse pumps which remove waste and take it to the main drain. And not just from the toilet, but from the shower and basin too.

This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, but it is now commonplace delivering outstanding results for homes, commercial stores and restaurants.

Ensuite requirements

Although we recommend consulting a professional before carrying out this type of work, there are some basic requirements needed in order to fit an ensuite.

  • If you do not have nearby drain, you will have to install a waste water incinerator. This requires an electricity and water outlet to be located where you want to fit the bathroom.
  • The shower and toilet must be close to each other, ideally on the same wall.
  • The shower must be raised.
  • Maximum height from the drain must be 5 metres.
  • The horizontal distance from the toilet to the drain must be a maximum of 20-25 metres.
  • Suitable ventilation: there must be a window or nearby external wall where an extractor can be installed.

How to fit an ensuite into a small bedroom

With professional help and a good layout plan you can make the most of the square metres available in your room, even if it is small.

A good option may be to separate both spaces with a small partition, with one side acting as the bed headboard and the other side as a space to fit the sink. This will allow for the space to appear lighter and larger.

To make sure the ensuite fits in with the rest of the room, you could clad the partition so that the style and quality can be appreciated on both sides, this should not take up too much space. A good choice for this is Dekton Slim 4 mm, as you can choose from 24 different colours, and it requires minimum maintenance.

Another option could be to create a frosted glass cabin to separate the toilet from the rest of the room, leaving the basin and shower in view as part of the room itself.

For a small bathroom, a small shower tray can be fitted with a glass partition that makes it feel bigger and allows for more light to flow around the space.

When cladding the bathroom, we recommend using a material with a neutral colour to make the space feel lighter and larger. This will also make it easier to combine the decor with the rest of the room.

We recommend this selection of colours for Dekton Slim 4 mm when deciding on how to clad your bathroom:

Aura: inspired by Calacatta and Carrara marbles, Aura’s character speaks for itself. It has a white background with natural stone like grains.

Aeris: this is a light toned colour with cream details inspired by Piedra Paloma limestone. It is a neutral and subtle colour and is easily combined with different spaces and architectural styles.

Lunar: this is a take on conventional concrete, inspired by industrial interiors. The discrete structure over a white base colour gives it a very contemporary look.

Danae: like sand blowing in the desert, several beige tones can be found floating around, creating a sensation of constant movement.

Sasea: inspired by Sahel limestone, this retains those distinguished tones with the added quality of Dekton. Sasea has a creamy-grey colour, with a detailed design and a controlled and soft structure.

You can achieve an extra clean look by using the same coloured Dekton for your basins and shower trays.

Dekton Basins can be fully integrated into the bathroom countertop and are the perfect choice due to the material’s reduced water absorption and stain resistance.

The Gocce shower tray, made with Dekton Grip+ is non-slip and very compact, making it perfect for floor-level shower trays in small spaces.
