Haldane Martin’s Dombolo table collection marries his uniquely South African design character with Cosentino’s iconic surfaces. The collection, which debuted at Decorex Cape Town in July, stole the show at Decorex Joburg in August as part of the Atelier by Cosentino stand.
Haldane Martin, the eponymous Cape Town-based brand of premium outdoor furniture designer and director Haldane Martin, employed Cosentino’s Dekton for a quirky table inspired by his home country.
A uniquely South African table
The Dombolo Table is a voluptuous piece named after the Xhosa word for dumplings. Available in various versions seating between four and ten people, the organic-shaped table tops ‘are a biophilic reference to cellular amoebae’, says the designer. ‘In bean shapes and imperfect circles, Dombolo has a relaxed feel appropriate for outdoors.’
By pairing these naïve curved shapes with intentionally oversized power-coated tube legs, Haldane Martin added a subtle sculptural quality to the tables.
Topped with Dekton
For the table tops, Martin chose a variety of Dekton surfaces from the Kraftizen collection. Dekton, Cosentino’s ultracompact surface, has a hand-plastered surface effect, providing what Martin describes as ‘all the engineered durability for a luxuriously long lifetime outdoors, as well as a soft tactile feel that brings to mind the humble abodes of Mykonos’.
The Krafitzen colours used in the Dombolo collection included the relatively neutral-hued Nacre, Albarium, Argentium and Micron, while the five-seater table is topped with Umber in a warm, natural-looking terracotta pigment.
