Sometimes there is nothing like taking on a new challenge to reveal how good we can be in a different discipline that we are not so used to. Interior designer Taffina Farrington had this revelation when she took on the interior design of a holiday home in Galway, Ireland. Drawing on three decades of experience, Farrington transformed the space into an oasis of luxury and style, masterfully using her skills with Cosentino materials, particularly Dekton.
Farrington, who began her career at the Dublin Institute of Technology, has developed an enviable reputation for projects that combine the dramatic with the functional in commercial venues such as bars, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs. Her unique approach, influenced by a family background in theatre and set design, focuses on creating spaces that are equally impressive in both natural and artificial light. This skill paved the way for Farrington’s transition from commercial design, mainly nightclubs, to her first residential project in Salthill, which we are talking about today.
This luxury apartment is a testament to her ability to harmoniously combine practicality with aesthetic appeal. As a holiday home, “you could say this penthouse has some nightclub design elements, not in an ostentatious way, but because of the stunning sea views and the size of the rooms, especially the master bedroom, which is spectacular,” she explains.
“They wanted a glamorous space to entertain and enjoy at the same time, with luxurious finishes that convey a sense of exclusivity through high-end materials in the interiors,” she points out. And that’s where Cosentino comes in, with Dekton as the ultra-compact stone of choice.
Multiple applications and colours of Dekton contribute to a vibrant, textured interior
The designer points out, “This was the first project I had used Cosentino products on and the results were fantastic! Farrington’s choice of Dekton was no coincidence; its durability, versatility and upmarket aesthetic lend themselves perfectly to creating a space that exudes opulence and exclusivity.
Dekton is used in a variety of applications, but Farrington highlights the customer’s preference for it in the flooring – an unusual choice in Ireland, but one that defines the character of the space. “I knew I wanted the large format slabs in the main kitchen-living-dining area,” explains Farrington, emphasising the importance of variety in the design. The use of different Dekton colours – six in total – in areas such as the three bathrooms and the hall demonstrates Farrington’s ability to seamlessly integrate functionality and aesthetics.
Details such as the choice of Dekton Awake and Dekton Laurent in the bathrooms reflect the designer’s ability to blend with the natural and organic palette visible through the penthouse windows. This meticulous approach to colour and texture ensures that each area of the apartment feels cohesive and connected to its surroundings.
The couple who own this holiday home wanted to recreate a reception atmosphere, or at least capture the look and feel. Farrington was able to bring that sense of luxury and tranquillity to the hall, the welcoming space for visitors, with Dekton Awake once again playing a starring role. “It is a compact space that needed the high quality finish that Dekton offers,” she remarks. A penthouse to enjoy! .
