“Never underestimate the power of a small space” is what Marc and Dijana from MAREDI Design told their client when they set out to remodel the steam shower in their 100+ year old Chicago home. Part of the primary ensuite of the home, the goal of the designers was to create a sanctuary that the homeowners could easily walk into every single day. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Windy City, this steam shower was envisioned as a retreat to unwind and feel like you’re in a resort without leaving the comfort of home.
During the mood boarding phase of the projects, the designers kept coming back to Moroccan plaster, called Tadelakt, a natural material used for centuries in Turkish baths and public bath houses around the world. Tadelakt was not suitable for this installation, and that’s where the journey to find the perfect match began. In addition to finding a material that looked and felt the same, they also wanted something that met their criteria for material health and sustainability.
Dekton Nacre from the Kraftizen collection was the perfect match in terms of color, texture, and overall aesthetic. The color palette for the bathroom was minimalistic, so the designers selected each material with intention and purpose. For instance, the handmade floor tile needed to be the ideal complement for the wall treatment, and with Dekton Nacre, they were able to accomplish the vision.
Additionally, it is made sustainably and with product transparency, key principles in MAREDI Design’s ethos. Speaking of sustainability, off-gassing is incredibly important for the design duo - something commonly seen with natural materials. With Dekton, however, there is no off-gassing of toxins and it does not require any intensive chemical-based sealants and treatments.
“After having the opportunity to visit Cosentino's Industrial Park in Almeria, Spain, we are even more convinced of all the ways that they are leaders within the market of sustainable surfaces. The product transparency, innovation, and lifecycle circularity put them at the forefront of sustainability as we move into an age where these criteria are no longer negotiable.” shared Marc and Dijana, “their wide array of products, from Silestone to Dekton, are top tier and have brought so many new possibilities to our interior (and exterior) creations. The product accessibility is equally important as we are a design practice that is operating on multiple continents!”
