As is the case every year, when March arrives, the Spanish capital is at its most artistic. Despite the growing number of new names and events, the ARCOmadrid Contemporary Art Fair remains the jewel in the crown. The 43rd edition of the fair once again becomes an international meeting place for galleries, artists, collectors and enthusiasts from 36 countries, consolidating its position as one of the world’s most influential art fairs. For a few days, Madrid becomes the epicentre of artistic and cultural dialogue.
In addition to the groundbreaking proposals of the different gallerists invited to the event, the design and execution of the Guest Lounge has become another of the highlights of the event, especially for lovers of architecture and design. This time, the Madrid-based studio Burr, known for its experimental approach to architecture, has been responsible for its concept and execution.
This proposal, which won thanks to its interpretation of the ARCO 2024 programme ‘The shore, the tide, the current: an oceanic Caribbean’, manages to create a space that invites rest and encounters, capturing in its design the concepts of shore and tide through a layout that encourages interaction and contemplation.
The space will serve as a rest area for industry professionals and, to ensure maximum comfort, has been divided into three key areas: lounge, restaurant and private areas for sponsors. Let us now turn our attention to the lounge, where a collection of unique objects, seemingly from another time, stand out like treasures found on the beach at low tide. It is here, in this living space, that the Madrid-based studio and Cosentino have collaborated to create a unique piece in Silestone, the latest generation hybrid surface. The piece acts as a reference point for the whole space, a kind of eye-catching totem.
Its manufacture required a meticulous process of cutting and fitting different Silestone slabs. Two very special shades, Romantic Ash and Eclectic Pearl, from the brand’s latest ‘Le Chic’ collection were chosen for this project, along with Et Marfil from the Eternal series. The studio wanted to offer something more than design and aesthetics, and thanks to Cosentino materials it was able to enhance the Guest Lounge by introducing sustainability. This has been made possible thanks to Hybriq+ technology, which redefines Silestone as an innovative hybrid surface with very low silica content, composed of premium minerals and recycled materials.
The Guest Lounge project is the result of a collaborative effort coordinated by the Leading Brands of Spain Forum (FMRE in Spanish), and includes the participation of other leading brands such as Actiu, Crevin, Fama, Gandiablasco, Joquer, Lladró and Ondarreta, as well as the contribution of Megaandamios, Megabastides, La Real Alcalaina, Garnica, Acerinox, and Ledsc4. This joint effort highlights the importance of the synergy between art, design and sustainability, creating a space that serves as a place to rest and meet, but also conveys the values of innovation and environmental responsibility.
The Guest Lounge at ARCOmadrid 2024 is therefore more than just a space within the fair: it is a manifestation of the commitment to create environments that inspire and promote reflection on the role of design and architecture in the current context. This space invites visitors to enjoy a break in an environment that combines beauty, functionality and sustainability, reflecting the spirit of ARCOmadrid and its commitment to promoting dialogue and innovation within the contemporary art sector.
