Thiel Fassadenbau is a German company specialising in site management, construction, production and installation of façades. So it was no easy task to choose a design that would capture the essence of this company, founded in 1959, and a material that would highlight all its idiosyncrasies. But Sedlbauer Architekten PartG mbB found the key, and now the headquarters is a compendium of the best from all the different eras of the family-owned company.
The studio was commissioned to design a two-storey, transparent, curved building with cantilevered roofs and named it NUE 8 after the company’s address, Nürnberger Straße 8 in Feucht, a town on the south-eastern outskirts of Nuremberg.
Rounded geometry
The organic shape of the floor plan – in the form of a rounded sail – takes the geometry of the site itself as its axis. The result is a building with a closed, elegant façade on one side and a cool, open, glazed façade on the other, with large cantilevers and roof terraces in the sunny areas. The building brings together different contrasting features: open and closed, warm and cool, covered and transparent, all connected by stainless steel strips around the perimeter.
Natural light entering the interior
Inside, the floor plan lines are subtly tiled, while a central gallery with circular skylights provides the offices with a vertical communication level and the passage of natural light from above. The result is an open plan administration building filled with light and vibrancy, but also offices, open communication levels and an informal bistro area.
Overall, the rooms are bright and comfortable, and heat is minimised in summer thanks to large cantilevered roofs and a concrete core activation system with cooling function.
The terraces, the main feature of the project
For a project of this nature, and for a company that specialises in façades, the design of the terraces was fundamental. Stan Sedlbauer, architect and founder of Sedlbauer Architekten PartG mbB, chose the colour Dekton Sasea for the floor of the terraces. He says he was impressed with the large-format slabs because of the pleasant feel of the surface, the narrow joints and the elegant and beautiful terrace look he was able to achieve.
The tone was perfect and subtle to create a pleasant atmosphere and blend in with the other elements of the project. Its weather resistance and ease of maintenance were also key factors in the studio’s decision. In short, offices that are designed to stand the test of time – both literally and figuratively.
