One material, a range of uses: this modern house features Dekton Lunar in the fireplace, kitchen and bathroom

“Design, technique, research. These are my key words for each and every one of my projects, which are strongly inspired by the character of the customer and the context”, explains Italian architect Virginia Lorello. These three principles also guided her when she undertook the renovation of a villa in Mariano Comense, which she turned into a modern and functional home.
“The space that required the most thought was the large open-plan area on the ground floor, which includes the entrance, the living room and the kitchen. The particular shape of the space and the need to restore certain functions to it required careful preliminary work, in order to enhance the existing geometries and make the most of the available space”, says Lorello.
Thus, we decided to use the wooden panelling on the walls and doors to convey the journey through the interior of the space and act as a “multimedia wall”. A dropped ceiling further encloses the entrance space and is supported, on the opposite side, by a piece of furniture with a fireplace, opposite the sofa area in the living room.

The fireplace is clad in Dekton Lunar, a reinterpretation of conventional cement inspired by industrial design with an off-white background that makes it very trendy. “The design of the Lunar slabs fully reflects the personality of the project, which uses mainly desaturated and slightly cool tones, but without losing its cosy character”, says Lorello. Thanks to this, and to the use of large format slabs (cut to size), this element features a homogeneous, magnificent, elegant and very contemporary appearance.
But in addition to its design, the choice of Dekton is also due to the technical characteristics that make it a unique material, such as its high tolerance to fire and heat, which it can withstand without affecting its surface.

“Opposite the living room is an open kitchen which has been designed to be pleasant, practical and suitable for different times of the day”, Lorello further says. Dekton Lunar is also present in the kitchen. Specifically, it has been used on the worktop and the island. As well as creating a visual harmony with the fireplace, the material was chosen for its high resistance to impact, abrasion, stains and scratches.

The bathroom is the last room in this house in Mariano Comense in which the ultra-compact Dekton surface has been used. In particular, it was used in different thicknesses for the floor, walls and countertop, as it is a material that is completely resistant to water and moisture.
“Harmony and visual continuity are key in projects”, explains Lorello. “In this case, a hard surface resistant to water, heat and corrosive agents was required in three different rooms of the house: bathroom, fireplace and kitchen worktop”, she further says.
“Dekton is a practical, versatile and thin material that has allowed us to solve several major construction problems and that, above all, reflects the ethical and design principles of our studio, which favours natural materials and does not conceal their true nature through imitations”, says the architect.
