A home to dialogue with the natural surroundings

Hidden away on a wooded slope near Basel, a crystal-shaped building can be seen. Rising up from a small clearing, it is just high enough to remain at eye level with the surrounding trees. The “Casa Forest” home belongs to a family of five who love the “art of the clear line” as much as they love nature. This is also reflected in the view from the kitchen-living room into the garden.

The house is scarcely visible from the neighbourhood road. You can only see the multifaceted building, set back among the trees, as you approach across the light-coloured natural stone slabs made from local gneiss. “The earth-coloured outer skin and the angular form of the building are in a constant dialogue with the natural surroundings,” says Juan Gonzalez from the architectural firm DALUZ GONZALEZ ARCHITEKTEN. “In dialogue with the builders we have attempted to create a contrast as well as a harmony with nature – externally as well as internally.”

The heptagonal building and the nest-like roof terrace are clad in massive fine stoneware slabs in irridescent dark brown – polished above and below like gemstones. The front of the building is interrupted by large, sometimes room-height window facades. The south side is almost completely glazed, allowing the daylight to penetrate deep inside the building. In the open eating and living area, the walls are executed in cool exposed concrete. As a counterpoint to this, the window mouldings and the shelves are made from honey-coloured oak, and this is then is also carried through in the treads of the stairs and floors of the bedrooms, conveying a natural warmth.

Silestone Blanco Zeus, harmony in the heart of nature

On the ground floor, the generous eating and cooking zone opens up to the garden. The transition is almost invisible, thanks to the floor-height glazing. This gives you an uninterrupted view into the greenery while cooking or when the family come together to eat at the simple oak table. “The intention is not to separate the kitchen off or place it in the middle of the space, but create a link to the living area,” says Juan Gonzales. “This way we have combined a kitchen area with plenty of storage space and a kitchen island that reflects the multifaceted shape of the building and creates a light, airy transition to the eating area.”

“The specially shaped kitchen island can be used from both sides,” explains Ian Hunziker from the carpentry firm SCHREINEREI HUNZIKER. "In essence, the furnishings are based on standard elements that we have individually adapted. As a result, the interior of the floating wing contains a robust, extremely durable beam construction to which the 60 cm wide cupboard elements are attached. The fronts are made from strong, 19 mm MDF panels with slightly rounded edges painted in RAL 9016 matt white. The work surfaces and rear wall of the kitchen area are made from Silestone in the Blanco Zeus Extreme shade."

Cosentino supplies Silestone in over 80 designs. “But only Blanco Zeus Extreme from the Mythology Collection had the desired white shade that creates a timeless and energetically warm effect. The builder was delighted,” recalls Ian Hunziker, who had the low-silica mineral surface precisely cut to size and supplied by SCHÜRMANN NATURSTEINE. “Silestone is very hard-wearing and offers a high level of stain and fade resistance. It is also easy to clean, which makes it ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and furniture. It also has a uniquely beautiful and glossy surface, which in the “Casa Forest” now reflects the hazy outlines of the trees.”

A company kitchen full of character

This US company’s aim was to create unique and timeless common and kitchen areas at its North Carolina headquarters. Both the client and the architecture studio in charge of the project, Gensler, were looking for a material that would be aesthetically powerful and at the same time stand the test of time, bearing in mind that these are areas of heavy traffic and daily use.

Both fell in love with Dekton Rem when they saw a sample of it. The architects knew right away that it was the perfect material, but it lacked something to add sophistication. So instead of using Rem in a matt finish, they came up with the idea of a polished finish. Thus Lincoln was born – a new and original colour designed specifically for this project. This was made possible thanks to the features of Dekton iD, a technology that allows for unlimited customisation of Dekton slabs and the creation of unique textures, colours and patterns.

Inspired by marble

This new colour, which enhances Rem’s characteristic brown and grey vein pattern with golden hints, has been used in various areas of the kitchen, as well as in rest areas. More specifically, the worktops, island and bar feature these textures inspired by the elegant white marble, reminiscent of natural Calacatta Lincoln itself. Its shiny, polished finish emphasises its sleek, modern design that blends perfectly with the dark cabinets and stainless steel appliances. As a result, the space gives a sense of calm and timelessness to the common areas of these offices.

Marmo scuro dall'anima elegante

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Numero immagine 151 della sezione corrente di Aguas férreas di Cosentino Italia

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

Stylish shapes

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.

Dekton, a resistant and sustainable surface

This innovative and forward-thinking project by Four Architects has created a relaxing and welcoming space at a Manchester office building for commuters to shower and change after cycling into work.  Dekton in 4mm Kreta was specified for the walls and 8mm Lunar for the flooring, both from the Industrial collection, along with 11 Exelis shower trays in Nolita and three Silence basins in Miami Vena.

Dekton is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle, making it a truly sustainable choice perfect for climate conscious contractors.  It’s also highly durable as it’s resistant to UV rays, scratches, stains and thermal shock and it can also be used for wall cladding and flooring both inside and out for a fully co-ordinated look

An easy-to-maintain surface

“When it came to designing the shower block and bike store, we knew we had to use durable, hardwearing materials,” explains Matt Atkinson, Director at Four Architects.  “At the same time, the space needed to be easy to clean, hygienic and low maintenance as well as offering commuters and workers somewhere comfortable, warm and welcoming for them to shower and change after cycling into work then get changed again to cycle home.  We really wanted bespoke basin and shower sizes and it was Cosentino’s cut to size facility that enabled us to achieve this."

The whole project took around 12 weeks in total and this included tiling, laying the Dekton surfaces, installing showers, basins and the bike store.  The result is a really forward-thinking space that commuters can use to help get their working day off to a great start.  The eco-credentials of the Dekton also help to give this Manchester city centre office building a sustainable building solution.

One of the largest hotels in Finland

The former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building, originally designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1909, has been transformed into a Scandic Hotel. The building is strongly tied to Helsinki’s railway station, an important part of the cityscape as well as culturally and historically significant, as it served as the railway administration headquarters for almost a century. The design work on the hotel was exceptionally demanding. The building is protected under the Act on the Protection of the Built Heritage.

Representing Eliel Saarinen’s Art Nouveau style, the former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building was renovated and expanded into an elegant hotel with almost 500 rooms as well as meeting and event facilities. The cultural and historical landmark’s demanding renovation and change of use was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency and the city of Helsinki.

The renovation was an exceptionally demanding project. Protected parts of the building include its entire exterior and roofing, as well as its main lobby, main staircase and hallways, the longest of which is 159 metres long.

Silestone, between the elegance and the versatility

The building’s extension was built according to the design proposition from the architectural office Futudesign, which won an architecture contest for this project in 2017. The new extension completes the elegant hotel complex, which also includes a beautiful courtyard and an outdoor terrace for the restaurant.

A first-class classic meeting place in the heart of the city, the hotel’s Bar G provides a colourful and cosy oasis for relaxing. Customers can enjoy refreshing drinks and stylish cocktails from the bar’s elegant Silestone Eternal Marquina countertops.

The stylish restaurant inspired by classic European cuisine features stunning matte black Silestone Eternal Marquina kitchen worktops. These Silestone worktops offer an excellent combination of elegance, quality and resistance.

Taking care of every last detail from the plate to the table

Food as a language of love. This is how renowned chef Aitor Jerónimo Orive sums up his passion for gastronomy, heritage of his homeland, the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain. “My grandparents are wonderful cooks and I always caught them in the kitchen, stirring a pot of hot, hearty and incredibly delicious food”, Aitor recalls. For Aitor, the logical step was to become a chef and open his own culinary space. So far, nothing unusual. Except that he opened his restaurant in Singapore, more than 11,000 kilometres away from home. It was there that he opened the Basque Kitchen, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Basque cuisine has become part of international cultural heritage.

Now, after several years of hard work that have earned him the appreciation of the general public, the Basque Kitchen by Aitor moves to the historic building The Fullerton Waterboat House, and does so under the guidance of the design studio Grey Matters, featuring Dekton as the reference material. “Moving from Amoy Street to its new location was a bold move that required careful planning. Redefining a brand that has such history and so much prestige is a task that must be handled with delicacy, sensitivity and the utmost care so as not to undermine all the hard work that the Chef and his team have put in over the last few years”, explains the studio.

Dekton Keyla and Silestone Eternal D’or

The design was to be minimal, bespoke and ultra luxurious. The choice of Cosentino’s surfaces, Dekton Kelya and Silestone Eternal D’Or, for the bar and cabinets was a logical step that improved both the performance of the space and the visual quality of the design. The result is a well-balanced palette of materials that creates a luxurious setting with high performance kitchen and bar areas that allow the Chef and his team to shine.

Beyond their design and finishes, both Dekton and Silestone provide highly resistant and easy to maintain surfaces that are perfect for kitchens, whether at home or in Michelin-starred restaurants, where the pace of work is hectic and each space must be planned to the millimetre.

Dekton functionality for the most demanding juries

For the third year in a row, Cosentino is the reference partner of Team France in the famous international cooking competition Bocuse d’Or. This year, they have also contributed to the renovation of the kitchen of the ‘Refuge’ in Écully, located 10 kilometres from Lyon and very close to the Paul Bocuse Institute, where chef Davy Tissot’s team prepares for the competition.

Two Dekton colours of great beauty were used in the kitchen renovation: Kovic for the wall cladding and Laurent for the worktop. In choosing Dekton, cleanliness, functionality and excellent performance at high temperatures were paramount. The result is a kitchen that is modern and perfectly equipped, yet elegant and timeless at the same time.

Dekton Laurent is inspired by the natural stone of Port Laurent and features an almost dramatic finish with brown and golden veining. A very theatrical context for presenting the work to be judged by the best jury.

‘A good chef has to be well equipped to be able to make beautiful things. The benefits of Dekton in terms of hygiene are beyond reproach, combined with its elegance and visual beauty.’

Bocuse d’Or, the haute cuisine competition

The Bocuse d’Or is an international culinary competition created in 1987 by the renowned French chef Paul Bocuse, who passed away in 2018. The competition brings together 24 chefs from 24 countries every two years with several qualifying rounds and an enthusiastic audience. In five hours and thirty-five minutes each team must prepare two dishes. A jury of the world’s top chefs will deliberate on the winning team. This year, the finals will take place on September 26th-27th in Lyon.

Team France is led by chef Davy Tissot. The nomination of this Meilleur Ouvrier de France and chef-trainer of the starred Restaurant Saisons in Écully for the Bocuse d’Or Team France is based on technical mastery, hard work and creativity.

Over the last three years, Cosentino has been committed to work well done and the creativity of Team France and has been supporting them at the Bocuse D’Or. The redesign of their kitchen using Dekton as a technologically sophisticated and beautiful material is a good proof of this partnership, which is destined to last for a long time.
