A ‘facelift’ for Westfield Newmarket

Westfield Newmarket shopping centre in central Auckland, New Zealand, reopened in August 2019. After 18 months of construction work, this shopping centre, which dates back to the 1980s, reopened its doors with a new look, 230 shops and 2,800 parking spaces.

The project involved the renovation and extension of the existing building, doubling its previous size and quadrupling the number of shops. After many months of work and an investment of 790 million dollars, the updated Newmarket rises majestically between 277 and 309 Broadway Street.

It was clear to the team of architects from the Scentre Group, the project developer, that the façade would play a key role in the renovation process. In addition to becoming the most eye-catching design feature, it had to incorporate the latest technology in terms of energy efficiency. A ventilated façade therefore appeared to be the most suitable choice. And for this ventilated façade, there was no better partner than Dekton.

The installation was carried out by the Eurotherm Facades NZ team. Two anchoring systems were used in the process: the Etem Alum Systemand the Keil Anchor. The technical support from Cosentino's headquarters in Spain was key to the successful execution, providing a prompt and professional advisory service whenever requested.

Sandy-coloured Dekton Danae

The new ventilated façade features 700m2 of 12mm Dekton Danae slabs. In addition to its clean, fresh look, Dekton Danae contrasts with the black window frames and the large glass surfaces.

Dekton Danae is a colour from the Natural collection that is reminiscent of the movement of sand. It is one of Cosentino's best-sellers as it works perfectly in almost any space. Furthermore, being a neutral colour, it is full of nuances that ensure its versatility and say goodbye to boredom.

In the case of the Westfield Newmarket shopping centre, this effect of movement is the result not only of the richness of the material -Dekton Danae- but also of its clever cutting: all along the façade, in a continuous pattern, one larger row is placed every four rows of slabs.

This feat of design aims to bring the Newmarket in line with the district where it is located: a thriving and trendy shopping area with the best tapas bars, the most alternative art galleries and the most authentic Maori arts and crafts.

The shop “Busted” gets a new look

Busted is a fashion shop for young people located in the main shopping area of Silkeborg, in northern Denmark. The shop needed an update to attract a younger and more demanding clientele. During this refurb process, both the façade and the shop window played a key role in attracting customers to the shop.

Busted's owners commissioned architect Morten Thomsen, founder of MMe Byg Aps, to undertake the renovation and interior design project. Thomsen invested time in researching different cladding solutions that could radically change the Busted façade. In his search, he had the good fortune to come across Cosentino's Project Manager for the region, who introduced him to the Dekton brand and its countless benefits for façade applications.

Morten was impressed with the 8mm thick slabs, which allow for on-site handling and processing, as well as the use of an invisible adhesive for fixing.

You can’t go wrong with Dekton Danae

MMe Byg Aps studio wanted a colour that would appeal to Busted’s target customers: women with a youthful, casual style, and within a fairly broad age range. From the very beginning, Dekton Danae was a favourite finish because of its brightness and timeless character. Its availability in large format slabs- 320 x 144 cm - and in two textures - grip and matt - were two highly valued aspects in the final choice. After all, it is not for nothing that this is one of Cosentino’s best sellers.

The new Busted shop, which opened in spring 2021, now looks spectacular on one of Silkeborg's most popular shopping streets. Long-time customers are delighted with the change and, more importantly, the new look is attracting a new clientele who had never thought of coming.

The renovation of the Busted shop is yet another example of the importance of design in public spaces in commercial terms. It also illustrates how quickly the investment is recouped when the project is well planned and you work with a partner like Cosentino.

A home to enjoy what matters most

The avant-garde ultra-compact surface Dekton has been specified as the façade of a multi award-winning residential build in the heart of London. Two 23-storey tower blocks in Greenwich, the Union Wharf Creekside Buildings have created 249 homes to rent in south London. One of the tallest modular buildings in the UK, the project was the first in the country to cater solely and specifically for families, with buggy storage, acoustic noise insulation and an on-site nursery for parents with young children.

Involved from inception to completion, Cosentino worked closely with architects Assael and HTA over five years to help deliver the best design and finish. 3,000m2 of Dekton was specified for both towers in the Union Wharf development, adorning the top penthouse level and down two sides of both buildings. Developers, Essential Living, utilised Dekton in a large redevelopment project, Vantage Point Archway Tower back in 2017, making this an easy decision for subsequent projects.

Dekton facades, sustainable and designed to last

With high rise façades being one of the key news topics in the UK, the imitable benefits of Cosentino's Dekton material, including safety, sustainability and energy efficiency, are all paramount considerations, especially within living quarters. Boasting LEED and BREEAM certifications in environmental and sustainable design, as well as the highest classification in terms of fire resistance: A2 s0 d1 for 12 mm, Dekton’s durability, ease of installation, consistency in colour and thickness as well as high scratch resistance and low porosity makes it the ideal surface for façades.

Dekton also offers high resistance to ultraviolet rays, frost and thawing, as well as colour stability and high stain resistance, which results in it being an ideal material for use on exterior ventilated façades. Cosentino’s National Façade Manager, Simon Hope comments "This project demonstrates both a practical and aesthetically pleasing façade, which integrates with the window layout while complementing the innovative location. The result is a striking finish utilising a product that benefits from strong eco credentials and cutting-edge technology - all helping to meet the client's brief."

In addition, carbon neutrality has been achieved for the entire life cycle of Dekton, from the extraction of the raw material and the calculation of the direct and indirect emissions from its production cycle (and those derived from its use), to the end of the product’s life. This milestone is a result of the strong measures taken by Cosentino to achieve greater efficiency in terms of energy, consumption of resources, use of renewable electricity and sustainable mobility policies.

Dekton, glass and wood in perfect balance

Architect Moshe Zion explains proudly the inspiration behind his latest project, Villa Rosh Hanikra, a villa located in a kibbutz in the north of Israel, on the Mediterranean coast. The sea views from the villa are an inseparable part of the house and the unifying feature connecting the interior with the exterior. Taking this view of the sea as a starting point, Zion has designed an open, transparent space with clear views over the garden and pool.

The aim? To create a contrast between the coldness of the materials with the appearance of concrete and glass and the warmth of wood. The different planes in Dekton Kelya and Dekton Soke respond to this aim, also creating a sense of dynamism on the façade.

The choice of a material with the appearance of concrete creates a very industrial and trendy look. Large terraces with wooden floors and glass balustrades are the perfect counterpoint to the concrete effect. The warmth of the wood and character of the open-plan kitchen, with its impressive Dekton Radium island connecting the interior with the pool area, embrace the visitor as they enter the home.

The challenge of updating a rustic style home

The major challenge of this project was to revamp a rustic style home with a tiled roof into a modern and inspiring design. In terms of look and feel, no one would think that this house is a renovation of a traditional style home. The “miracle” was made possible by the large Dekton surfaces installed on the aluminium structure.

This modern concept is also evident in the design of the interior spaces of the house, perhaps the most obvious example being the kitchen, seamlessly connected to the view of the sea and the outdoor area. The large island, which also serves as a bar, provides an open and highly functional meeting area, matching the design of the rest of the house.

A façade renovation is probably one of the most visually impactful solutions to transform a house without significantly changing its internal structure. In the case of the Villa Rosh Hanikra, the result is so spectacular that it looks like a newly built house.

Why use Dekton for fountains?

The Kiryat Gat water fountain in Israel is located in a very special place, where the old and new city meet. Furthermore, this new fountain at the junction of several roads also serves as a gateway to the city.

When artist and designer Elya Shapiro was commissioned to design and build this fountain, his first thought was to choose a beautiful and stunning material which would also age well over time. The choice of Dekton Ventus met most of the requirements of the project: it is resistant to chlorine and salt water, can be cut precisely to suit different thicknesses and is suitable for use with a KEIL anchoring system on the façade.

Shapiro also took aesthetic considerations into account in his choice, such as the wide range of Dekton colours and the possibility of custom cutting, depending on the needs of the project (with or without edges, for example).

From a professional point of view, Shapiro considered the advantages of working with Cosentino: long-term warranty, responsiveness and problem-solving, on-time delivery and supply of additional, perfectly packaged material, in case of breakage.

Bildnummer 141 des aktuellen Abschnitts von Kiryat Gat Water Fountain - Seite 3 von 5 von Cosentino Deutschland

The cycle of life as inspiration

Shapiro designed a huge, constantly moving spiral that would create different perspectives depending on the direction of the traffic. The spiral symbolises the cycle of life that leads to infinity. To create this movement, the fountain uses 180 small sprinklers mounted on its inner face, which spray water at the centre, in the middle of the arch. The point where all the water comes together generates a water explosion and a waterfall that symbolises the connection between traffic and urban roads in the public space.

The human challenge of this project lies in combining different disciplines harmoniously, from large-scale construction work to the development of small processor chips. The execution of the project required very careful planning and coordination.

From a technical point of view, the challenge was to design an arch which would simultaneously twist and converge. The dimensions vary along the entire length of the structure, thus requiring different fittings at each point of the arch. Furthermore, in order to simplify and customise the different production processes, cutting-edge technologies were used to provide first-class performance.

Dekton stands the test of time and weather

Aesthetics and resistance to Seoul’s extreme weather were two important requirements for this project where temperatures can soar as high as 35°C and drop to as low as -20°C.

Dekton’s superior performance makes the material a great choice for such a demanding architectural project. Dekton not only improves functional performance of the façade with respect to heat reduction and insulation, it also increases weather protection and durability with its UV resistance, stain resistance and long-lasting colour fastness.

Design with commitment

Dekton Trilium is also the first recycled colour within the Dekton line, thereby improving the overall sustainability of the building. Ultracompact surface Dekton is now officially recognised as a carbon neutral product since 2020.

Within the building, 80-sqm of Dekton Trilium in 8 mm thickness continues to line the walls of common corridors with its somehow metallic effect, creating a seamless transition and connection with the outside surrounding.

In addition to façade and wall cladding, a multitude of Cosentino surfaces are integrated into the showroom space as worktops to complement MAXTIME products, including: Kelya, Aura, Korso, Domoos, Entzo, Kira, Arga, Sirius and Lunar for Dekton colours; Urban Frost, Arden Blue Volcano and Pearl Jasmine for Silestone colours and, finally, Sensa Black Beauty.

Minimal joints for seamless cladding

For the façade of this residential building located in Durango, a small town in the north of Spain, IDOM’s team of architects strived for a simple, elegant finish. Lines and right angles work together with the creamy tone of Dekton Ariane, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing look. From a distance, this ventilated façade offers a sense of continuity, which becomes more pronounced the closer you get thanks to the minimal joints which vertically style this four-storey new building clad in Dekton.

On façades, the ultra-compact Dekton surface offers high UV resistance, ensuring colour consistency over time. Furthermore, as a non-porous material, Dekton is easy to clean, even in urban environments where it is exposed to dirt, wear and aggressive stains such as graffiti. Thanks to its light weight and its availability in a thickness of just 0.4 cm in its Dekton Slim version, this surface has become a benchmark for the installation of ventilated façades in architectural projects of any size and complexity.

Dekton perfectly adapts to every application

The LD Sevilla hotel is located in the north of the Andalusian capital, next to a service area and motorway exit. This strategically located hotel does not compromise on style, offering its guests a distinguished experience based on quality services and attractive designs. VAU Arquitectura has been in charge of the hotel's design. The architecture studio relied on Dekton’s ultra-compact surface for a multitude of applications, using 3,100 m2 in the building.

From the exterior façade, which must withstand high levels of solar radiation, to the always busy common areas, such as restaurants and toilets, Dekton's unique features perfectly meet the needs of a bustling hotel.

Bildnummer 239 des aktuellen Abschnitts von LD Sevilla - Seite 3 von 5 von Cosentino Deutschland

A façade with personality

Alejandro Rivero, the architect in charge of the project, took care of every detail of the design. Starting with the façade itself: "We wanted a cladding that would enhance the horizontal joints while concealing the vertical ones. This way, we could highlight one of the hallmarks of the building, which is precisely its horizontality".

The standard slabs (3200x1440 mm) were cut to three different heights (700 mm/350 mm/175 mm). These were adapted to the façade, which is characterized by different heights, sizes and cantilevers. For these reasons, we needed a versatile and adaptable façade material, something like a tailor-made skin. The slabs were deliberately placed in different stripes, without following a pattern, which creates an interesting contrast, a sort of 'disorder within order'.

A colour range inspired by nature

Dekton Keon was chosen from the wide range of colours for the façade. This colour is reminiscent of the variable granite formations and surfaces found in the surrounding area.

Dekton’s resistance and low levels of absorption make it ideal for the demanding, daily requirements of a hotel. Dekton Laos, Soker and Sirius colours have been used for the surfaces in the cafeteria and the guests’ bathrooms.

A material that takes care of details

The LD Sevilla hotel has an outdoor terrace that offers stunning views of the Andalusian capital, a place where you can enjoy a drink at the bar, which is also made with Dekton.

And last but not least, Dekton has been used to clad the main hall, softening the transition between exterior and interior. The versatility of the material, together with some details such as the die-cutting of façade pieces for backlit signs and vents “helped us to solve many technical issues of the project”.

The final result is "a building of clean lines with horizontal stripes enhanced by strong horizontal joints, where we have tried to create a powerful, unified image while maintaining attention to detail".
