Sensa Taj Mahal paves the way at Changi Airport Terminal 2’s northern wing

Opened in 1981, the Singapore Changi Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world for both passenger and cargo traffics. It currently holds Skytrax's title as the World's Best Airport, which it has won a dozen times. It is also the first airport to have won the accolade for eight consecutive years.

This is thanks to Changi Airport's continuous expansion, refurbishment, improvements and rigorous maintenance to keep up with the travel, hospitality and shipping industries. The latest of this expansion is the northern wing of its Terminal 2 (T2). And Cosentino is proud to be part of this illustrious projects.

Completed on 28 September 2023 after three and a half years of renovation, the interior of T2's northern wing is a brainchild of Paris- and Bangkok-based architecture and interior design office JH Boiffils and RSP Architects Planners and Engineers, who also designed the southern wing of the terminal that was completed earlier.

The completed and operational southern wing has upgraded the airport's overall capacity to 90 million passengers per annum (mppa) and T2’s handling capacity has increased from 23 to 28 mppa.

Lining the floors of of this newly completed wing is Sensa Taj Mahal, a soft cream-coloured marble with subtle golden brown veining from Sensa by Cosentino's most premium natural stone range.

T2's design concept aims to create a serene and soothing atmosphere, fostering a sense of tranquility and relaxation.

It draws inspiration from nature, incorporating natural materials in its wall cladding and flooring, complemented by lush green columns showcasing a distinctive array of plants - a natural fit with Sensa range.

Mined in Cosentino's quarries in Brazil, Sensa Taj Mahal has not only dressed up T2's new wing with subtle opulence, but also imbued with unparalleled ease of maintenance.

The Sensa range has been treated to be stain-resistant at the molecular level, presenting flawless look free from all the worries of wear and tear of natural stones, allowing it to be installed at high-traffic areas.

"At Cosentino, we are honored to have our materials selected for the flooring of Changi Airport, a global beacon of modernity," says Álvaro González, Vice President of Cosentino Asia Pacific.  "This project has been a distinctive challenge, requiring us to uphold elevated standards in design, quality, and service."

He credits the success of the projects to Cosentino teams across three countries collaborating together. "Our teams across France, where the visionary architect JH Boiffils was based, and Brazil, home to our natural stone quarries and production facilities, collaborated seamlessly. The dedicated on-site team in Singapore further ensured the successful realisation of this ambitious vision," he adds.

"Months into its use, we take immense pride in the flooring's performance, which not only meets but exceeds expectations," Gonzalez shares. "The natural products sourced from our quarries in Brazil have proven resilient and aesthetically enhancing."

He elaborates, "The result is not just a testament to Cosentino's craftsmanship but also a significant contribution to the enduring beauty and functionality of Changi Airport, marking it as a global masterpiece of architectural and design excellence."

Don Loo, Regional Director - Asia at Cosentino, adds, "It is indeed an accomplishment and a great honour for Cosentino to be involved in the completion of the world's most iconic project. That further demonstrated our commitment, credibility and capacity in handling any  mega project."
