Sala Beckett as a venue for contemporary theater performances. Sala Beckett as a training ground for young playwrights. Sala Beckett as place for cultural exchange –through workshops and seminars – with other countries. Founded by Sanchis-Sinisterra as Teatro Fronterizo over twenty years ago, today it is a benchmark in the drama world, both within Spain and internationally.
The project maintains the spatial characteristics of the original building while adding facilities on top to accommodate new facilities. With this intervention, new and old will work in simultaneity: the user will encounter remains of previous occupations, but the whole building will be updated for its new purposes.
The result is not just a stacking of programs. Inside, a hu
ge foyer connects the three levels; outside, a new roof turns the old ‘Cooperativa’ into a big house: a new home for playwrights.
