Traditional Courtyard House

Houses of this kind were grouped together and, sharing baths and separated by narrow alleys, formed the historical hutongs of Beijing Inner City, many of which have been demolished. Meant to be used as homes or hostels, the different spaces around the courtyard can also be rented as venues for public events, meetings, or parties. The undulating brick pavement of gray tones twists to form walls and ceilings, connecting interior and exterior spaces at different heights. Placed on the east and west sides of the courtyard are wooden boxes with convertible furniture integrated into the structures. The spaces can thus be turned into bedrooms at night.
