An atmosphere featuring subtle touches reminiscent of an undersea cave that gives the impression of being in an underwater restaurant. This is AO Omakase, a Malaysian restaurant whose elegant aquatic look is enhanced by the use of various elements, such as the aluminium plate on the ceiling, which resembles the surface of the ocean. This aquatic effect is also reflected in the blue shades used throughout the space, as well as in the marine delicacies served at its table.
That’s right. Table, in the singular, as there is only one: a U-shaped bar around which diners sit, enjoying a sushi-based menu cooked by renowned Japanese chefs on the spot.
In search of a beautiful and hygienic material
“For this project, we envisioned a contemporary and elevated experience, however there were not many materials capable of guaranteeing a hygienic environment”, says COX Co. In response to this, the studio in charge of the design proposed Dekton, an ultra-compact stone composed of a sophisticated blend of more than 20 minerals extracted from nature and manufactured in a totally sustainable way.
To achieve this, Cosentino uses the exclusive TSP technology in the manufacturing of Dekton. This technology is capable of sintering mineral particles by making them bond together, thus perfecting in a few hours what nature takes thousands of years to produce.
This ultra-compaction process results in a material free from micro-defects that cause stresses or weak points and with almost zero porosity. This makes it perfect for those places where extra hygiene is needed, as it does not absorb liquids, making it extremely easy to clean and completely antibacterial.
Dekton Kreta: peace of mind with warranty
“We were looking for beautiful colours that would fit in with the decoration and our design concept, as well as offering certified, food-safe surfaces”, the studio further says. In this case, the colour chosen was Dekton Kreta, a shade inspired by traditional cement floors and evoking a sense of serenity that is perfect for the calm atmosphere of the space. Its design is homogeneous and restrained, although it includes darker or lighter areas depending on the density of the pattern. In addition, its matt texture and grey shade combine perfectly with the materials used throughout the restaurant, as well as with the intense blue shade that characterises its details.
“We loved the colours, and the customer was reassured by the warranty offered by the material, which was a very important aspect for them as a commercial entity”, the studio says. The studio refers to the 25-year warranty of Dekton, a material that does not scratch, does not warp and whose colour does not fade over time. In addition, it is resistant to abrasion, impacts, acid stains and even fire and ice, making it perfect for the continuous flow of plates and the preparation of food, which is cooked directly on its surface in a show cooking area of the bar top, where the talented chefs show off their skills every night.
