Summer is slowly coming to end, but that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your garden. As a multi-functional space, the kitchen is an ideal place to start an urban garden making fresh herbs and vegetables easily accessible all year-round. The Silestone Institute has put together four tips for bringing your outdoor garden indoors.

Take advantage of vertical spaces

If you can’t build outwards, build upwards. Make use of an empty spot and set up a vertical urban garden. Try hanging glass jars on a wall or from an underused cabinet door for easy access and a pop of beautiful greenery.

Include a growing table for decoration

Can’t go vertical? Try a growing table – a popular trend that not only adds beauty to a space, but also provides the means to grow vegetables, herbs, and even flowers. It is important to keep in mind that some indoor vegetation can thrive without tons of sunlight while other plants require natural light exposure to help accelerate the growing process. Make sure to include plants with coordinating sunlight.

Create a garden on your windowsill or counter

You can create a small garden by a windowsill in the kitchen just by adding a decorative shelf that supports it. You can also take advantage of any countertop space that receives a lot of natural light. Either of these smaller urban garden options are great for planting aromatic herbs for adding fresh flavour to your meals.

Grow small varieties

All horticultural crops have many varieties, allowing you to have different types of fruit and vegetables in a variety of colours, flavours, shapes and sizes. Variety is the spice of life, and that applies to your urban garden too!
