Ukiyo: the Japanese trend sweeping the interior design industry

The Japanese concept of ukiyo could be summed up as “living in the moment, detached from the bothers of life”. The use of this concept in interior design and architecture allows for the creation of spaces that promote serenity, contemplation and appreciation of the ephemeral beauty of everyday life within a visually attractive and functional environment.

This is the trend that has inspired the UKIYO collection by Dekton, designed by Claudia Afshar, who brings us her reinterpretation of grooved textures. This collection is an invitation to enter a world where time passes leisurely and the present moment is the only thing that matters, enjoying the beauty of natural textures.

Following the resounding success of the UKIYO collection, this texture has also been incorporated into selected Silestone colors.

In this article, we give you some tips on how to incorporate the ukiyo concept into your interior design and architecture projects using Dekton and Silestone materials.

Minimalism and simplification

Go for simplicity in the design of your architecture and interior design projects, stripping them of all unnecessary elements and choosing pure, uncluttered lines. Use a palette of neutral and soft colours that conveys a sense of calm and serenity.

Get in touch with nature

Use natural elements such as wood, veining patterns, and organic colors to create a connection with nature. The UKIYO collection features a wide range of nature-inspired colors, including Bromo, Umber, Nacre, Kreta, and Rem from the Dekton brand. Silestone also offers a range of colors, including Versailles Ivory, Parisien Bleu, Jardin Emerald, Bohemian Flame, and Raw D.

We also recommend designing spaces that allow in natural light and views to the outside, which is very useful for creating a link with the surrounding natural environment.

Elegant and functional design

Prioritize functionality and practicality in your designs, getting rid of mess and making the most of space. To this end, you can turn to the UKIYO grooved-textured finish to create elegant and efficient furniture and architectural elements.

Privacy and quietness

Design spaces that can provide privacy when required, such as meditation corners, reading areas or retreat spaces. We recommend the use of soundproofing techniques to create a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, such as the grooved cladding of our new collection, which improves thermal and acoustic insulation.

Play with light and shadow

Use strategically placed lighting to create light and shadow effects that highlight the beauty of the grooved finishes of UKIYO and the other materials used in the space.

Using traditional Japanese design lamps, such as washi paper lamps, will allow you to create cosy atmospheres, soften the light and give your project a masterful touch.
